Mary Abshire

1 – Please tell us a little bit about yourself

By day, I am a government employee. At night, I am a Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Author. I live in Indianapolis with my loving husband, witty daughter, and ridiculous cat.

My interest in dark, mysterious, and dangerous creatures started in my youth. Sci-fi and horror shows were my favorite. During my teenage years, I read every Anne Rice book available, had a plethora of pen-pals I wrote to, and enjoyed 80’s new wave music. In my early twenties, I dabbled with writing, but never pursued it as a career. Fifteen years later, I decided to write again. After I wrote a few full length novels, I came to the realization that I couldn’t stop. What started as an interest grew into love, and is now an addiction.

2 – What were your inspirations for writing or becoming an author?

Reading inspired me. After I read, my mind wanders. What if this? What if that? Traveling opens up my mind too. I have a lot of ideas for books. I think writing has always been a part of my soul, but I never pursued it. I’d love to write full time one day.

3 – Tell us about your Series.

The Soul Catcher series is about a half-demon who can send evil souls to hell. In the first book, Claiming the Evil Dead, a vampire offers her a job to send the soul of a rogue vamp to hell. While she searches for him, she falls in love with… I won’t say in case you want to read the book.

In the second book, Catching An Evil Tail, she wants to get out of a bargain she made with a demon, so she agrees to send the soul of a werewolf to hell. She also has an issue with her boyfriend to resolve and the demon just makes matters worse. Isn’t that what demons do? LOL.

In the third, Fighting Evil, she’s fighting for her life. An organization of vampires called the VETOV (Vampires for the Ethical Treatment of Other Vampires) thinks she is a threat to them. Yes, she sends a soul to hell in the process of battling for her life.

In the fourth one, Love Conquers All Evil, she’s on the run with her lover. Yes, she bumps into trouble (as always), has a near fatal encounter (again), and has to solve a mystery to send an evil soul to hell. Each book she encounters more trouble and has conflicting emotions about her lover that she has to deal with. There’s a bad boy demon who enjoys causing trouble, and a hot Alpha that’s a bit of a distraction too.

I have another series, a short one–two books. The first one is called The Awakening and the second is The Quest. They’re both urban fantasy. The Awakening is set for release January 2012 from Lyrical Press. I’m hoping The Quest will have a 2012 release date too. First, I have to polish it, then submit it.

My current WIP is a paranormal romance series called Midnight Gardens. It will be about paranormal suburbia, with a twist. (smile)

4 – Why did you write it?

I wrote the Soul Catcher series because I wanted to write something different. Vampires are my favorite paranormal creature, but I didn’t want to write a vampire novel. I wanted a protagonist who had internal conflicts to deal with as well as those external ones that drive a story. I thought for several days… what would be different? I hadn’t read any books about people or creatures who sent souls to hell.

The idea seemed original to me. To make her unique, I made her half-demon, but she’s not bad. She thinks she is because of her blood, but she has to realize she’s not. And it takes someone special, someone she normally wouldn’t trust to help her realize the truth. The basic idea of sending souls to hell seemed like a good series to me, so I went with it.

As for my urban fantasy books, again, I wanted to write something different. I like fantasy and I’m really starting to enjoy creating different creatures and worlds. They’re action packed, first person POV, full of suspense and mystery.

5 – Why should people buy it?

In my opinion, they’re different, and quick reads. The Soul Catcher series has steamy romance, a noble vampire, a naughty demon with attitude, a hot Alpha, plenty of action, suspense, and in the last book–mystery. There’s even a bit of humor.

6 – Where can readers find your book(s)?

7 – Do you have any book trailers, etc.?
