Dr. Jackson Burnside is an orthopedic surgeon who made his own way. Always different, he got out of Natchez before his family could throw him out, but still wishes things could be reconciled. He's built a successful practice and a sound reputation in Carlisle. When he's called to the hospital for a consultation, the last person he expects to meet is Wes.

Wes Fortier had fewer opportunities than Jackson, but he’s worked hard and has a good job that brought him to Carlisle. A work injury lands him in the ER, where he crosses paths again with Jackson, who may be the silver lining he has been praying for in a life filled with gray.

Jackson’s and Wes’s renewed friendship deepens to attraction and possibly unspoken love. Both Wes and Jackson find something they’ve been missing. Just when they begin to lay the foundations of the kind of relationship they’ve both wished for, Jackson’s mother swoops into town with an olive branch for her son, but her hidden agenda could threaten everything.

Dr. Jackson Burnside is an orthopedic surgeon with his own practice, a practice that is very demanding because he never says no when called on. Once again, a call from Carlisle Medical to take over the case of a man involved in a serious car injury with a broken arm and leg brings him back to the hospital after a long day in his office. The hospital set the arm but is unsure of how serious the leg is and Jackson will have to determine what treatment the patient requires. This time not saying no will change his life.

His patient is his childhood friend, Wes Fortier and his injury is serious and requires surgery. With a broken arm in a cast and his leg in a cast and boot using crutches will be impossible. Wes requires care and he is new in town living in a walk up and no friends except for his doctor. Realizing the predicament that Wes is in Jackson insists he come stay with him. Wes is an independent guy but he knows he can’t do this alone and accepts Jackson’s offer.

Both Wes and Jackson are familiar with their families and the fact that by virtue of their attraction to men rather than women was all it took for both families to throw their sons out of their lives. Jackson is happy to have Wes stay with him, even Poppy his dog is happy with the new arrangement. As they get comfortable with each other and have feelings that go beyond friendship neither of them is willing to express those feelings. Wes afraid that if things go wrong, he will lose his friendship with Jackson and Jackson afraid to believe that someone could really love him when his own parents didn’t.

A beautiful story about two men once best friends as children hoping that they can be much more as adults, but that depends on one of them openly communicating with the other.
