Candace Cooper’s life changed at the age of twelve, twenty-two years ago when her fifteen-year-old sister was kidnapped and her body and kidnapper disappeared. For twenty-two years she has been determined to find her sister and make sure to remind the police that she and her kidnapper were still out there. Unfortunately, taking a hike she would witness something that would reignite her worst nightmares.

It was a snowy day but she was sure she saw bloody footprints in the snow and when she went to follow them, she came face to face with a man, knife and rifle in hand, a man she was sure was guilty of something so she ran back to her car abandoning her search. She has lived with guilt over not saving her sister and now she fears that once again she abandoned what she was sure was a young person to whatever fate a monster had in store for her.

Detective Aiden Farrell is also living with guilt making a mistake while a Seattle police office that cost a young child her life and nearly destroyed his career. It was that mistake that cost him his job and took him to the Briggaton police department. Now he is on the search for a young girl who disappeared from her room just like the five girls who were taken twenty-two years ago, one of them being Candace’s sister. Now he is determined to find this girl a promise he made her parents.

He follows up on the report that Candace made when she returned from her hike but she doesn’t reveal everything she saw and felt convinced that she is once again allowing her past to influence her present. She wonders if she is just seeing monsters and the man, she saw was just another hiker. Unlike the original cop, Joe Breacher, now a detective and Aiden’s partner who was on the scene when her sister disappeared and did not follow up, Aiden is going to move Heaven and Hell to find the missing girl and put the kidnapper behind bars.

As Aiden begins to believe that the kidnapping twenty-two years ago is somehow related to the kidnappings happening now and especially since Candace is attacked, he finds himself risking his career when his feelings for Candace go far beyond that of a witness, his concern for her is stronger than his fear of losing his job.

This book was exciting from page one to the end leaving me breathless and sitting at the edge of my chair. Two people with tragic pasts find each other but then there is a kidnapper and killer who may also find her. I can’t imagine any lover of suspense not loving this book it is non-stop action filled with surprises, great detective work and amazing characters.
