Sterling Vaughn was a fashion photographer until his then boyfriend brought his career to a grinding halt. He returned to his hometown, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, setting up a studio in his father’s house that he left to go to a senior development. His photographs are of students graduating and other personal photographs but a far cry from travelling the world shooting famous models.
When Lucille, the Garden Club president, asks him to create a fundraising calendar, he realizes it has been done repeatedly. While discussing the calendar her great nephew, Connor, shows up wearing a kilt and getting Sterling’s attention. The discussion leads to an idea for the calendar, Hunks of the Month, but getting volunteers for the calendar turns out to be more difficult than expected.
Sterling persuades Connor to pose as April in his kilt to create a striking photo with two men holding flower bouquets. April is half done and that leaves eleven and a half months to fill. They attempt to get firefighters or police officers all the men from Carlisle. Now the calendar brings Connor and Sterling together working at getting men to agree to pose and it becomes more difficult than they expected.
As the two men work closely together their feelings grow but Connor worries that Sterling’s old boyfriend will come back and convince him to go back to his old career. The search for men for the calendar proves to be near impossible and the realization that it won’t work becomes obvious. Then things take a turn for the better.
Sterling’s photos are beautiful, bringing attention to his work which makes Connor’s fears a reality. As a history professor Connor’s life is busy working toward tenure while Sterling’s business grows. The calendar gets a lot of attention with some people being disgusted that it is a gay calendar, so their attention proves both bad and good.
Sterling’s past resurfaces, putting his relationship with Connor at risk. Despite this, Connor’s life improves. The success of the calendar grows, Sterling’s business grows and their feelings for each other grow, but there is something standing in the way.
The book was wonderful, and I got a lesson on what makes a good photographer. Mr. Grey gives an excellent description of what makes a good picture and what most of us fail to see. Like most people I believed you line up the camera, snap and you have a picture, but it is an art I took for granted.
