Elidor MacKenzie has a gift she can't return—the ability to absorb the joy, pain, and suffering of others. She's spent her life running from what she considers her curse. Now, her best friend is dead, and she alone holds the key to an archaeological discovery that could destroy a culture. With newfound inner peace, Elidor has returned home to make amends and guard the secret revelation. But greed-driven scavengers have followed her. Once again, the energies of Joshua will stir the hurricane, with her at the deadly center.

Jules never got over Elidor. Twenty years and a famous journalism career later, he's back in Joshua—and so is his first love. If his heart can stand the torture, he'll risk reviving their relationship. But saving Elidor from herself and the secret she won't give up may be the death of them both.

With Jules by her side, Elidor is determined to outrun the scavengers, guard the secret, and renew their love. But fate is coming after her, and there's nowhere the couple can hide.

If you liked this author’s earlier offerings in the MacKenzie Chronicles- Secrets of the Ravine Book #1 or Mystery on Spirit Mountain Book #2, you will love this one!

There is no prerequisite to read the earlier two books to enjoy the third in the series as it is a solid stand- alone story. The first two books, would give you some background to the characters and how they are related.

This expanded storyline will involve you in their lives and shows you how intertwined the lives of everyone in any small town, ALWAYS stay connected – both in good times and when trouble rolls in.

Very relatable and believable characters come alive in this weaving story. Each personality shows us just how much they care about each other and where they live, while facing the daily dilemma about what to do next and who to keep safe.

You will be reintroduced to Phaedra (nee Halloway) now married to Harlan MacKenzie, who happens to be a brother to Magpie MacKenzie, who is about to marry her fiancé Zac.

Their sister Elidor MacKenzie (“Dory” to her family, “Ellie” only to Julien) has been away from her family and working away on extended archeological digs with her best friend Cam. When a fatal accident takes Cam’s life, Elidor is left with a huge secret, one which Cam begged her to keep forever.

Things get potentially deadly – both for Elidor and everyone around her when she quits the dig and returns home for her sister “Magpie’s” wedding.

She cannot help but be reunited with her old flame Julien when he returns home to look after his Uncle who just happens to live next door to Elli’s widowed father.

Only time will tell if Ellie can keep the secret and protect her old/new love Julien and her family and friends from the evil which follows her home to Joshua Arizona from the dig site.

Thrown into that mix, a whole troupe of fellows with their own, personal, agenda’s and greed: Ellie’s dig site boss Martin Egan (who is being blackmailed), local bad business guy Griffin Argonaut and his henchman Chang and a local informer, Griffin’s Apache friend “Jack”.

The story is seamlessly written, and brings all thing small town together beautifully – family and traditions, old loves lost and reconnecting, new loves found, Native beliefs, spiritualism, empathy and a good dose of history.

But it could all come unraveled if Ellie loses the secret held in her locket.

A few very scary moments, wrapped up in a life-long love story, set in scenic Arizona, around a long lost archaeological dig, will surely keep your attention. Hold on – this one is well worth the ride!
