Mother Teresa said, “There is more hunger for love and appreciation in the world than for bread.”

For Maeve, every moment on the streets was about two things: where could she find food and a safe warm place to sleep. But today she stood in a crowd transfixed by one of a store’s many Christmas display windows. She allowed herself this time to just be sixteen in New York City.

The faces of the tiny ballerinas were each different, unique. The only thing they shared was that they lived in a sugar plum village and performed a synchronized dance. Maeve stood entranced, remembering when she was five and her mother gave her a ballerina doll. A tear rolled down her cheek and she turned away from the sweet memory.

Sixteen-year-old Mike Harris pulled his peacoat tighter and slipped his hands into his gloves. Even though the wind rushed through him with its fierce cold, he did not move from his space in the crowd. She was here again today.

As much as he admired the perfect art of the tiny automated ballerinas dancing beneath swirling snowflakes, he admired her more. The girl had her own perfection in his mind with her bright green eyes and soft cinnamon red hair. Looking so pretty and sweet, she watched the figures in the window but never once looked his way.

Mike guessed she was around sixteen. Today he would summon his courage and talk to her.

Sixteen-year-old Maeve lives in a cardboard box but is enjoying watching the holiday windows and the toy ballerinas dancing around in the window. Maeve’s life revolves around finding food and being with her tribe, adults who have taken her safety very seriously.

When out of nowhere a young man around her age asks her to join him for hot chocolate her first instinct is to run and she does. Unfortunately, she has no idea that this young man would ultimately die trying to save her and would be a major influence in her life.

Mike Harris lives in a condo but ever since seeing Maeve he has been determined to meet her. Maeve is heartbroken to realize that Mike has died. She will soon learn that there are things out there that she could never have imagined such as the vampire who didn’t kill Mike but changed him.

Maeve is about to learn that humans aren’t the only one’s walking around and trying to exist. The monster that turned Mike is causing havoc and killing humans; he wants Maeve as his mate and wants Mike dead to eliminate any possible competition. When it becomes clear that the vampire causing all the trouble is not going to stop his attacks the King of the Vampires in New York, Maximillion Vander Meer and the Arnhem Knights come to the rescue .They have to save Maeve, Mike and all the innocent people living nearby that are in danger especially Maeve’s tribe.

Not one to run and hide Maeve is ready, willing and able to arm herself and fight for those she cares about. It doesn’t take long before Maeve and Mike realize that there is something linking them to each other, something and is obvious to all those around them. Danger, death, surprises, secrets, romance and the plight of the homeless which is a constant problem that we face every day with the exception of vampires added to the mix.

The characters are wonderful, Mike who will do anything to protect Maeve and Maeve who in spite of the evil some people commit is the first one to understand what caused them to be the way they are.
