Sentry by N.L. Hoffman is the second in the Sons of Lucifer series. She once again pulls back into an action packed world where dark beings mix with normal humans. In this case, we meet Tucker, a gargoyle hybrid who just found out he’s Lucifer’s son, and Jolie, the woman he’s supposed to protect… his soon to be ex.

Tucker never wanted to hurt Jolie. But she needs to know that she’s not really part of the mortal world. She’s from a magical realm, one she barely escaped. Though she was raised by a loving parent, it wasn’t her true mother. In order to stay safe, she’s lived a lie and has no memory of her past.

Jolie can’t believe she was married to a demon! A disgusting demon! She hates demons with a passion, and can’t believe Tucker is as demon-y as you can get, being one of Lucifer’s children. But, she also begrudgingly admires the fact that gargoyles are loyal. Just like gargoyles that adorn castles were guardians of the inhabitants, gargoyles in the modern world are relentless bodyguards/protectors who will never let anything happen to you. When Jolie finds out that her entire family was murdered in Faery by Light Elves. Her mother was Queen of the Dark Elves, and she’s the surviving Princess. The Light King is still after her—why? She’s his daughter, and she’s betrothed to the man of his choice, Tove.

But there’s never just one twist in Hoffmann’s books. Tucker is being pursued by a seductress of his own… sent by Lillith. But who the heck is that? While some stories say Lilith was Lucifer’s wife, in this case, she is his sister, and she’s eager to control the Dark Lands. She’ll seduce, enslave, and distract angels, elves, and any creatures she can to aid her in pursuit of ultimate power. To her, Jolie and Tucker are mere distractions, but her secret alliance with Tove allows her to control the Eradon Elves, Jolie’s remaining family.

While the webs that hold different players are complex, N.L. Hoffmann weaves a fine tale of alliances, betrayals, true family dynamics, and the power of love and magic. Well written, and Lucifer as a dad with no filter is adorable. Humor, heart, steam, and action are all rolled into one—and the story isn’t done. Lilith lives, and it’ll take all of Lucifer’s children to stop her from taking over the world. A third book in the series promises to tie up this arc of Lucifer’s three sons, but this book ends in a satisfying, steamy way, with Jolie and Tucker more powerful (and battered) than ever, and back together!
