The Capture: Book Three of the See-ers series by Joanna Giacomini is a fascinating and intricate story that blends magic, aliens, danger, and romance. In the third installment of the See-ers, we reunite with Ella, a woman who has had the ability to see tragedy before it happens. In previous books, she found others who were like her, others who had special powers. These special powers come from alien blood and witchcraft, both secrets which must be guarded from the ordinary populace.

In this book, a corrupt and power hungry villain who wants to exploit Ella and her lover Cliff, and Mario and his girlfriend Chelsea. Jeff was once a trusted member of their group, but his true nature is revealed when he begins experimenting with ways to harvest DNA from the group of See-ers, trying to inject himself with the right ingredients to combine all the best powers.

Jeff is not only the perfect, odious, sneering villain with his mad scientist leanings, he is also scumbag who brags about capturing and breeding Chelsea and Ella, along with his hapless henchman, Matt. While he claims women are superior in intellect, he boasts about their weak bodies and how they need to be sexually controlled. While the rest of the characters are likable, Jeff really makes your skin crawl and he’s one of the best parts of Giacomini’s work.

As Jeff takes Ella and Chelsea hostage, he lies to them and says that Mario and Cliff have given up on rescuing them in order to save the others in the organization and keep it running. Ella and Chelsea won’t give up on true love, however. They pretend to go along with Jeff’s plan to get married that night and consummate the wedding with their captorcs (ick). They work on a way to escape—but with so many powers up for grabs, it’s no surprise that Cliff and company save Ella and Chelsea first.

I will say that the book is sweet, has an excellent villain, a henchman you feel sorry for (he’s just so easily led and not very bright), and lovely main characters. But it feels like an over-complicated stew of powers and obstacles that are all resolved far too easily and unbelievably. For example, as Ella and Chelsea wonder if they’ll survive their escape, Cliff suddenly speaks to Ella through telepathy, saying he’s outside her window. New powers are frequently introduced and named as an effect of witch power or alien blood. The reader is left with a faced paced book that becomes oddly predictable.

I believe that these books are best read altogether, in order. I commend Giacomini for her creativity and hope that she’ll continue to tighten her storylines. A very enjoyable read.
