Veterinarian Lyris Jennings accepts a position at Whispering Winds Ranch, hoping for a fresh start—a quiet place to heal animals and leave her painful past behind. What she doesn’t expect is her new boss, billionaire horse breeder Ray Kincaid, to be as ruggedly protective as he is devoted to his teenage daughter, Maddy. Ray has spent years keeping his emotions locked away, determined to shield Maddy from further heartbreak. But from the moment Lyris arrives, she awakens something in him he thought was lost forever.

Just as Lyris begins to believe she’s found safety at Whispering Winds, danger creeps in from the shadows of Ray’s past. Someone is watching, waiting—and Lyris is caught in the crosshairs. When strange accidents escalate into real threats, Ray realizes the danger he thought he buried long ago has returned, and this time, it’s not just his own life on the line.

With the past threatening to tear them apart and an unseen enemy closing in, Ray will stop at nothing to protect Lyris. But as secrets unravel and trust is tested, will their growing love survive the storm—or will Whispering Winds Ranch become just another shattered dream?

Lyris Jennings is a veterinarian who has accepted a job for the Whispering Wind Ranch caring for their horses. She would be living in the guest house on the ranch and eating all her meals with the family and it was immediately clear from the start that there was an attraction between the owner Ray Kincaid and Lyris.
Ray has a fifteen-year-old daughter, Maddy, who is anxious to be a jockey much to her father’s dismay. Lyris has heard rumors of horses being doped so she knows she will have to be very alert to anything that seems amiss with the horses under her care. Her devotion to them is without question but she has suspicions about the Stable Master, Ted.
When one of the horses begins to act up, she takes a blood sample, and the horse was doped fortunately she was ready with an antidote that saved the horse’s life. She feels certain that Ted is responsible but there is no proof and she reveals what happened to Ray.
Ted is not the only problem, Ray’s ex-fiancé Marissa keeps showing up despite Ray’s insistence that she get off his property. The one thing that Ted and Marissa have in common is their desire for money and getting it any way they can.
Ray makes his feelings known to Lyris, but she was hurt by an ex-boyfriend whose father she worked for and is leery of getting involved again with someone she works for. While trying to get Ray to understand her feelings another horse is hurt, and a new colt is poisoned. Although there is no doubt in Ray and Lyris’s minds it is Ted, without proof there is nothing they can do.
Ray owns racehorses and they are in danger which would be the end of his business. Losing his business is secondary to the love he has for his horses. Fortunately, with Lyris at the ranch within easy access to the horses she has been able to keep the damage at a minimum.
This book like with all of Cynthia Woolf’s books was read in one sitting. Her books are full of romance and suspense so there is not a moment where I feel bored or that the book is slow moving. If like me, you are already a fan of Ms. Woolf’s than you know you won’t be disappointed, if you are unfamiliar with her works now is a good time to become familiar with her you won’t be disappointed.
