JJ Spritely, history professor and romance author, writes love stories, but her own happily ever after seems out of reach. She’s frustrated her most recent book is sitting in a warehouse instead of in the hands of her readers. And her relationship with her boyfriend has stalled. What else could possibly go wrong?
How about a return visit from Alex and Blake, the fictional characters from her yet-to-be-released book? They’ve jumped out of the pages of their book into JJ’s world before. They mean well, but they cause chaos wherever they go.
Kennedy King Cooper wants to propose to JJ, but his track record with this sort of thing isn’t good - and to further complicate matters, the new professor, Robert J. MacWhouton, is monopolizing JJ’s time. If he doesn’t ask her soon, he may lose her forever.
Alex and Blake are determined to give destiny a helping hand. They stand ready to do whatever it takes to help Kenn propose before a kilt-wearing romance hero wannabe sweeps her off her feet. If only they had a plan.
This time, it seems, no one is guaranteed a happily ever after.
Author Interview with Terry Newman
Author Terry Newman
What was the very first book you read?
Wow! What a great question. I wish I had an equally great answer. I remember when I was in first or second grade, maybe, borrowing Dr. Suess books from my friend who lived across the street.
Then in middle school, I fell in love with the series The Happy Hollisters. It was the stories of a family with five kids, who traveled the world. It was so much fun and I learned things. It was like a book club. Every month, another one would come in the mail. I begged my mother to buy them. And you know what? I knew while I was reading them, I wanted to be a writer.
But wait, there’s one more book that I read as a child that will always and forever stay with me: A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeline L’Engle. That book was a work of pure imagination. And I hear some people are trying to ban it.
What inspired you to write this book?
Imprinted on the Heart is the continuing adventures (or misadventures) of Alex Zurich and Blake Teesdale. They’re the characters of JJ Spritely, a romance writer and history professor in the story. And they jump out of the pages of their own story to help her with her own love life. Specifically, in this book, to help her get engaged.
Years ago, I was in a local production of Jake’s Women, by Neil Simon. The main character and his current wife were the only “real” people in the play. All the other characters his ex-wife, daughter, and psychiatrist—were the workings of his imagination. And Jake was an author.
That inspired me to put “imaginary” people of my own in my book. Only these people were hero and heroine of a romance author’s work in progress. Then the fun began. How would an author react to their characters popping into her world? And who could see them? Was she the only one? If people saw her talking to them, would it look like she was talking to the air?
I decided everyone could see them, which brought another challenge. How would they view the world? If they hadn’t experienced something within the pages of their book, or if it wasn’t written into their backstory, how would they deal it?
What’s your advice for aspiring authors?
My advice isn’t original and certainly not glamorous. But it’s this: Write as much as you can. Write anything. If you can write every day great. If you can’t (I know schedules can be brutal), don’t despair. Just keep writing.
Don’t ever, ever give up. If you want to be an author badly enough, you’re probably good at what you do. At least good enough to improve with practice.
And here’s the secret advice that’s probably the hardest to take: Believe in yourself. Believe in your writing. Don’t try to be the next James Patterson, Nora Roberts, or Emily Henry. Be the best you there is. I just recently learned this. My goal for this year is the be the best Terry Newman in the writing world.
And when you strive to be your best, you’ll find your voice.
