Although this is the fourth book in the series, it was definitely a stand-alone. My one regret is that I did not read the first three books as yet, but that will be on my to-do list. I can only imagine that the first three will be just as amazing as this one.
Enza DeLuca is co-owner of Java Genie in Chicago and her favorite time of day is when she is baking in the kitchen. One particular night she stayed late to perfect one of her culinary treats and when she finally left to go home, her life would be forever changed. She found herself being followed and her fear led her to an alley where she saw men fighting. She ran into what appeared to be a mist, only she went into it with a man holding on to her ankle.
Rhys MacLeod is a Watcher, a group of supernaturals who watch for trouble among other supernatural creatures. When he sees Enza running for the mist which in actuality is a portal. He refuses to allow her to enter without him. As a human, she should have been unable to see a portal much less enter one. From that moment on she would learn that the creatures in books actually exist and lived side by side with humans. She would also learn that she was not a full human, but was a halfling, half human and half Deserati demon. Needless to say, learning that you are a demon would be a lot for anyone to take in, but she has so much more to learn.
Enza knew that her mother had an affair in Italy and when she returned to the States she discovered she did not come home alone, because a little girl was growing inside her. Rhys at first thought that Enza was an enemy, but soon realized that was not the case and he began to feel protective towards her. When he learns she has a problem with anything electrical, he starts to guess at what power she might have and takes on the responsibility of introducing her to another Deserati demon, Miranda, who he knows will be able to teach her what she needs to know.
Enza and Rhys’ feelings for each other grow. In spite of the fact that the last woman he allowed into his home and heart betrayed him and the other Watchers, he can’t stop himself from wanting to be with her and protect her especially when two other demons begin to take an interest in her and her power.
I don’t want to give away too much, so I will just say that this book had sex, suspense, secrets surprises and wonderful characters. I look forward to more books in this series and in catching up with the ones I missed. Another wonderful paranormal series to add to my list of favorites.
