Anna thrashed and bucked like a penned wild animal. She was pissed off at him for more than just his conspiracy with her father to have her forcibly removed from her case. She was pissed that he seemed to have some kind of invisible magnetic hold on her. She was so sexually attracted to him, just being around him made her cream her panties. Even now while she wrestled with him, all she really wanted to do was grind her pelvis against his while she licked his Adams apple.
Hawke locked her wrists above her head, his hard body trapping hers.
“Look at me,” he demanded, trying his best to keep his voice even and controlled.
She shook her head.
“I’m sorry. I know I’m an arsehole, but I’m trying. I really am. I’d never intentionally do anything to hurt you or upset you. I’m going to let you up now, okay?”
Hawke grabbed her hand, pulling her up with him. Then, using his size and body to his advantage, he walked her backwards, pinning her to her car, effortlessly boxing her in so she couldn’t move. It was the only thing he could think of to get her to calm down.
What it did however, was give her the means and opportunity to reach inside his coat and pull his Beretta from its holster.
Anna flicked off the safety and slid her finger over the trigger of the pistol, aiming the barrel downward. Without a blink, she pulled the trigger.
Hawke stepped back with a string of curses, uncaging her from against the car. Through the large hole in his knee he could see the moonlight glistening off the puddle below.
Anna didn’t wait for his permission, nor for suggestions. But then, he didn’t expect her to. Clint was right, Anna was one woman who wouldn’t be instructed, nor guided in a safe direction. That left option B. Use mind compulsion on her and lead her out of there like a good little kitten.
Hawke stepped forward to look deeply into her burning, angry eyes, fully prepared to take her free will from her, but at the last moment he couldn’t do it. He loved that look of fire and defiance in her eyes, her soul so full of spiteful determination.
He couldn’t bear to take that from her.
“Pack what you need or I’ll do it for you. Either way we’re leaving in ten minutes.”
Anna looked like she was going to refuse, contempt crossing her face. “No. Why would I go with you and give up six months of hard work?”
“I promised your father I’d keep you safe.”
“I’m not a child. I came into this job knowing the dangers and I’m quite prepared to take any risks necessary to see it through. I don’t need you to keep me safe.”
The fury in her eyes and in her voice, suggested she was fully prepared to rip his arms from their sockets and beat him senseless with them. Normally he would laugh at her achieving such an act. Right now? He swallowed hard and took a step backwards after a quick risk assessment.
Anna looked down at the wound she’d inflicted on his leg and was surprised to see that the edges of the bullet hole were actually coming together before her eyes.
Ha, he really is almost indestructible, she thought.
That’s good. Now I don’t feel so guilty for doing this….
