Book blurb:
Who brings a Glock on a honeymoon?
Not retired detective Gavin DeGrassi. When his husband Ben asks who he plans to shoot, Gavin has no answer. They’re spending three weeks in Ben’s family cabin near Seattle, not chasing down bad guys. Or are they?
Ben finds evidence the car accident that claimed his parents’ lives more than fifteen years ago was not so accidental. To avenge the Haversons, Gavin dusts off his detective skills and unknowingly paints a target on their backs. Suddenly, Ben is the prime suspect in a crime and the message couldn’t be clearer: drop the investigation or suffer untold consequences.
Gavin will stop at nothing to ensure Ben’s safety and bring the Haversons’ killers to justice, but without help, they’re sitting ducks. Gavin must make unlikely allies in his quest to clear Ben’s name and stop a ruthless crime syndicate. But with his loyalties divided, how far is too far in his quest for justice?
Excerpt:
“I’m sorry, Gavin,” Ben said out of the blue.
I didn’t keep the surprise from registering, but I didn’t look at him, remaining cognizant of the people around us, alert for Renaud’s presence and gauging reactions to two men holding hands in a public place. No sign of the former yet, and no one blinked at the latter. It was freeing, but at the same time, I wished such public displays of affection were normal enough for me not to worry about it. “Why are you sorry?”
“This is our honeymoon, and I’ve pretty much wrecked it.”
“No you haven’t.” He shook his head in disbelief, and I stopped walking, tugging his hand to get him to face me. “You haven’t, babe.” Hell, Renaud’s boat was big enough it wasn’t getting out of the marina without us noticing, and this was important, too. “I loved being a detective, Ben. I loved solving the puzzles, the adrenaline rush when a new lead showed promise, when everything fell into place, and we could take a bad guy off the streets. I miss it, and before you ask, yes, I’m still fulfilled teaching others to do what I used to.”
He opened his mouth to say something, but I put a finger to his lips. “I retired for reasons beyond your worry that something would happen to me in the line of duty. I let my cases rule my life. I took on too much guilt when I couldn’t stop criminals before they hurt someone, blaming myself for the cruelty of others. I got too close time and again, and it wasn’t healthy. I thought I needed the job to be a good person, but you showed me I could be a good man regardless of the shield. I loved being a cop, but I lost big chunks of myself to it. Those were sacrifices I justified. But our relationship was one sacrifice I wasn’t willing to make.
“I won’t lie and say these last several days, chasing leads again, haven’t also scratched an itch for me. The stakes matter even more now, because it’s your future and your parents’ lives. You think you’ve ruined our honeymoon?” I shook my head, smiling crookedly. “This is the best honeymoon anyone’s ever had. The only stain is the threat to your safety. Don’t doubt for a second I’m right here with you, every step of the way.”
Ben took a big, cleansing breath. “Okay.”
I kissed him, unable to help myself and uncaring of the people around us. His warmth beckoned, and I slipped my arms around his back under his jacket, splaying my hands across his breadth. I let myself get lost in his closeness, his smell, the feel of him against me. It wasn’t a long kiss, nor was it aggressive, but that didn’t mean I didn’t feel it in my bones.
I pulled back and smiled, studying him, taking in his neatly trimmed facial hair, the way the late afternoon light gave his eye color a lighter, cinnamon cast, the sheen of moisture on his lips from our kiss. With my forefinger, I hooked a strand of hair behind his ear, trailing my fingertip along the curve of his jaw.
“I love you, Sir. And there’s nowhere I’d rather be than right here, right now. So I don’t accept your apology.”
His mouth quirked. “Okay, then I take it back.”
About the Author:
It began with a Halloween themed short story assignment from a second grade teacher, and from then on, AJ Rose fell head over heels in love with writing. Time has seen the beginning and end of many things, college and graduation, a finance career, and a marriage, and through it all, writing has been their first love. Now, AJ is also head over heels for their wife, fellow author Kate Aaron, who gets it, the twitchy fingers when word counts are low too many consecutive days, the thousand-yard stare when an idea turns AJ’s vision inward, and the jitters when the word-babies go out to meet the world. Nothing could stop the tall tales about imaginary people that refuse to be ignored. With a life full of this much passion, it’s no wonder AJ chose romance. The voices in their head are mostly of the male persuasion, so m/m romance was an excellent fit. But don’t be surprised if the occasional ghost still pops up.

Wow, lots of votes for Scotland, too! I didn’t have a honeymoon either, but we’re talking about a belated one. Maybe to Scotland, even.
My husband and I never went on a honeymoon, I think I’d like to do a belated one to Scotland. I love old castles and after 17 years of being married, my husband is wise enough not to disagree ;p
Kate and I haven’t yet either. We’re talking about taking a belated one sometime in the next year, maybe to Scotland, too. Her family has a croft there, which turns out, isn’t far from my family’s ancestral home. Like the road to get to their land passes within 10 minutes of the place my dad says is in our lineage. That could be fun. I’m with you on the castles.
I would love to go to Hawaii or Scotland!
Hawaii seems to be a big winner. For such a small bit of land, there’s a lot of beauty there.
Yeah, I’d love to go to Hawaii, too. It just looks so amazing.
I would love to take my wife to Ireland on our honeymoon this September but unfortunately I can’t afford to so we will be going to Canada for now. Love the Power Exchange series. Can’t wait for Restraint to complete my collection.
Ooh, Ireland! Canada’s great though, from what I’ve seen in some research on Montreal. And I’ve always wanted to go to Vancouver.
I’m so excited to get more Ben & Gavin. They’re one of my all time favorite couples! Already been on a European honeymoon but if I ever do a second it would be Hawaii.
I’ve never been to Hawaii, but would love to go. I want to see the lava fields!
