A grumpy lion shifter duke with secrets, a sassy human who knows nothing of the shifter world, and a fiery arrangement neither of them expected.

Cormac Donegan, Duke of Everard, is all too familiar with the perils of his shifter world, especially as a Dahlia, one of the dragon king’s elite spies. After a mission nearly costs him his life, Cormac is sidelined, healing and grieving his heavy losses. Then a different kind of trouble shows up on his doorstep, a human claiming to be his fiancé.

When Jason Reaves is nearly killed in a house fire, it becomes clear that someone is trying to murder him. With his already fragile health deteriorating, Jason’s only hope is to call in the debt a stranger owes his father– a favor that promises safety, protection… and marriage.

Jason’s escape leads him and his service dog, Mouse, to an impressive country estate. He’s expecting the older man who’d made the promise, not his ruggedly handsome son–who happens to be a Duke, as in rich and royal.

Will this Cinderfella find his happily ever after in the arms of a dashing–if somewhat irritable–duke? Or will Cormac’s secrets prove to be more dangerous than the shifters hunting him?

Well, I loved book one and gave it five stars, but I loved this book more and would give it ten stars if I could. The reason I loved this book so much was because of Jason Reaves, a character that had me in tears laughing and at times in tears from sadness.

Jason has irregular blood pressure which often leads to his passing out but his cardiac service dog, Mouse, manages to be there when needed. Mouse has saved him often but one night he saved him from dying in a fire. Jason’s house was torched and thanks to Mouse he was able to climb out the window. Someone tried to murder him like they murdered his father. Now with nothing but his backpack which is always ready in the event, he finds himself in a hospital and the laundry basket he was able to grab he is alone.

It is time for him to open the letter his father left for him in the event of an emergency, and this fits the bill. A visit to a safety deposit box reveals two more envelopes, one addressed to him, and one addressed to Duke Everard. The duke has agreed to help Jason if ever he is needed and although the idea of living with an older man on a ranch is not what he pictured, beggars can’t be choosers.

Cormac Donegan the Duke of Everard has spent the last year recuperating from an injury that left him unable to heal the way he should as a lion shifter. He is a member of the Order of the Blue Dahlias, the king’s elite spies and while chasing the creature responsible for attacking the palace Corac throws caution to the wind when he and his fellow Dahlia, Miles run headfirst into a mine. If he would have thought it through first, he would have considered that the mine could have been sabotaged, and it was with a bomb that killed Miles and seriously injured Cormac.

Cormac is anxious to return to the Dahlias and find the one responsible for attacking the palace and killing his friend and fiancé the prince. He has managed to avoid all social events and guests at his home, but he is about to have a guest that will change his life. His valet announces the arrival of Cormac’s fiancé sending him charging to the door to discover who had the audacity to say he was his fiancé. Jason presents the other letter his father left which acknowledges the fact that if it became necessary the duke would live up to his life debt promise and marry Jason.

With a little research Cormac realizes it was his father who made the promise, but he would honor his father’s word and marry Jason. Of course, he didn’t consider a dog being part of the promise, a dog that poops in his garden, but in time Cormac would realize that poop would be the least of his problems. Jason was also shocked because he thought duke was a name not a title and he has no idea what other secrets he would uncover I.e., lions, dragons, cheetahs and a world he had no idea existed outside of movies and books.

In time the creatures who attempted to kill Jason find him and the search for them is on. Jason and Cormac begin to have feelings for each other, Cormac even bonds with Mouse. Jason is the kind of character that you can’t help loving and that is exactly what happened to Cormac. Jason is his total opposite and yet can make him laugh and finally get out and smell the flowers.

There is danger, romance, sex and laughter, well I laughed a lot. I also must acknowledge the amazing service dogs that give unconditional love, companionship and help.
