Although this is the fifth book in the series each book is a standalone and wonderful. Dean Turner ex-special forces and his partner Melody Boyd ex-CIA have been assigned to act as drone operators for a studio scouting locations for a film. The studio is the client and wants to ensure that everyone on the scouting team is protected.
A problem arises when Dean and Mel are required to act as a married couple which sends Dean into a panic. Dean still suffers from his failed marriage which left him emotionally and financially scared and even the simple act of pretending to be married is throwing him for a loop. He wants out of the assignment but Mel is able to get him back on track. The job requires them to go deep undercover for a week meaning that they have to convince everyone that they are truly a newly married couple.
Other than Dean’s apprehension at playing a married man the job should be simple until a man from Mel’s past shows up. This was no ordinary man but one that had attempted to kill her and if not for a warning about what was going to happen, she would be dead. Presumed to be dead she is sure that she would not be recognized but Dean is not convinced. If she is discovered to be alive it would put a target on her back and Dean will do anything to protect the woman he has cared about but refused to follow through on his feelings.
What should have been a simple assignment turns out to be anything but and Dean and Mel find themselves involved in something major. While performing their job and keeping Mel safe they finally realize that their feelings for each other go way above that of partners but they have to keep everyone safe and discover what the owner of the dude ranch they are scouting on is actually doing and put an end to him and his plans.
This book was full of suspense, romance and secrets and kept me at the edge of my seat. The characters were wonderful especially watching Dean who has to overcome a past that left him unwilling to ever get involved in a relationship again and Mel a strong take no prisoner’s woman who gets him to put the past in the past.
I am a big fan of Regan Black and recommend this book and if this is the first book of her’s you read, I have no doubt you will be as big a fan as I am.
