Orphaned as a child, Jordan Kramer is a 28-year-old loner who lives for his work as a firefighter. It’s who he is. But his life changes when, on his way home from a fire, he finds Benny walking along the side of an isolated mountain road. With a storm coming, when Benny indicates that he’s alone in the world, Jordan follows his instincts and decides to help.
To child psychologist Duane Houser, Jordan was the one who got away when Duane got adopted as a teenager. So imagine his surprise when he’s called to help a traumatized child and crosses paths with Jordan again after all these years. Jordan is still as he remembers—stunning and strong, with a hero streak a mile wide.
Both Jordan and Duane understand a life without parents and swing into action to help Benny. The boy’s life is a bit of a mystery, and as they work together to help Benny, they rekindle feelings both had kept hidden. The chill from years spent apart quickly melts away and old love flames to life again. While helping Benny process the loss of his family, both Jordan and Duane realize that their shared desire might be within reach. Or they could have it ripped away from them all over again.

Jordan Kramer is a fireman who was orphaned as a child and whose childhood was dark except for his best friend and first crush Duane Houser. Duane was one of the lucky ones and was adopted by a family in spite of him being over the usual age for adoption. Jordan was not one of the lucky ones and his life as an orphan has affected every part of his adult life.
Jordan had no idea that when he was called for an emergency fire that this call would change his life. While returning home he saw a young boy walking alone on the side of the road and Jordan had no intention of leaving that little boy alone. Jordan knows just what will happen to the boy since it happened to him and is determined to help him even if it means keeping him with him in his home. Help comes in the form of a social worker, Duane Houser, Jordan’s past comes crashing down on him.
Duane agrees to help Jordan keep the little boy whose name they discover is Benny. His mom is dead and his father just died leaving the poor boy no older than ten alone, but lucky for him he has found a champion in Jordan who will not allow him to live the life he did. A young boy has brought two men together who always loved each other but never got to express how they felt and now circumstances may change all that.
This was a wonderful story, a story that elicits all sorts of emotions especially since it involves a young child. Duane and Jordan were two men who knew firsthand what it was like to live in a group home and not have anyone to love and care for them. I learned what it was like when my husband and I volunteered for CASA an organization meant to help children like Benny but it was always too little and children just kept getting shuffled around.
I read this book in one sitting glued to Benny’ story and what happens to him and the two men who want to help him and whether they get the HEA they deserved.
