Another visit to the Immortal Pirates of the Sea Dog, another wonderful story and another pirate who meets a woman that may change his life. In this case it is Duke Proctor who now owns a security company and who just left a very noisy venue and needed to chill out. Then someone sticks a gun in his back insisting that he gives it back, give what back. It turns out to be a woman who decides that shooting him in the foot would get her what she wants, no chance Duke is immortal and the only thing that suffered injury from the shot was his new boots.
When she asks for her comb back, he realizes that she is talking about a mermaid comb, a comb that the crew had turned over to Agent David Bale from the U.S. government’s top-secret branch, Department 13. Duke now knows that the woman who shot him is no ordinary woman she is a mermaid and the missing comb is hers. A mermaid comb in the wrong hands can be used to control a mermaid making them nothing more than a puppet so being out of the water for a long period of time is a death sentence but going in the water would leave her open to being commanded by someone wanting to use her powers.
Annika Mare has been on land for almost a month searching for her comb and being out of the water for so long has left her legs and feet with sores making walking difficult. Duke is willing to help her and since he knows where the comb is getting it back would be easy. Well like the saying goes “easier said than done”. A simple retrieval leads to problems in Department 13, a dead agent, a leak and yes, a missing mermaid comb. Now finding the comb and saving Annika will require the help from the rest of his crew and with a little investigation an employee named Holli Porter is obviously the person responsible. Another problem, she has disappeared.
While the search is going on Duke and Annika find their feelings for each other growing but she lives in water and he lives on land so how could things possibly work out. Well things get worse when a dangerous enemy comes back putting the crew in danger especially the ones who decided to give up immortality. Who Holli Porter is well just another surprise. Secrets of how Annika came to Earth are revealed and the secrets and surprises just keep on coming.
This series does not have to be read in order but if you have not read any of the books then I would begin with book one and then have six more to look forward to. Mystery, romance, surprises, secrets amazing characters, what’s not to love. Oh yes, the best part pirates and now even a mermaid.
