harlotte Saunders has a full life—a rewarding career as a nurse, meaningful volunteer work at a dog shelter, and family, friends and pets she adores. But no matter how hard she tries, she can’t forget the horrible event that’s haunted her for ten years.

A survivor of childhood sexual abuse, Damon Greyson now helps others who have suffered trauma. His experience and intuition alert him to trouble in Charlotte’s past, and he wants to help her, if only she’d let him.

As they work together to help veterans suffering from PTSD and neglected dogs needing loving homes, their feelings for each other deepen. But when the trauma from Charlotte’s past roars back to life, both are forced to confront their painful histories—or die trying.

This is a series that does not have to be read in order but I would suggest starting with book one since all the characters in the books are connected in one way or another and we are updated on their lives in other books in the series. This series covers the lives of people who have suffered and meet the one person who can help them through the nightmare that was their life. This is Charlotte Saunders and Damon Greyson’s story, both of them having suffered unthinkable acts that have changed their lives forever.

At the age of eight Damon was abused and it led to his desire to work with people like himself whose lives were changed by horrible circumstances. Unfortunately, in addition to living with the memory of the abuse and convinced he will never be able to have a normal relationship with a woman he blames himself for not reporting his abuser when it happened and waiting until he went on trial for doing the same thing to other boys Damon could have saved from the same nightmare he suffered from.

Damon is living with his sister Blair until work is finished on the building his grandfather left him, a building he is fixing up to accommodate veterans who need his help as a counselor and a way to reenter the world. Unexpected repairs are costing him time and money but he knows there are vets out there and he is determined to help them. While dealing with the building he reunites with Charlotte the girl he fell in love with when they were kids but she is not the same girl he remembered and although he still cares for her he knows he is not good enough.

Ten years ago, Charlotte’s life changed and since then she has kept herself locked away mentally. Like Damon she also doesn’t feel she deserves a man like him. Her secret is one she hasn’t shared with anybody; it is a secret and shame she carries alone and Damon suspects he knows what happened but no one can help until she faces what happened. This is the same way he tries to help the veterans suffering from the horrors of war, they have to face what happened and talk about it otherwise there is no way to help them.

This was a very intense book, kidnapping, rape, childhood abuse, lies and betrayals and shocking secrets. If that isn’t enough this book also deals with animal abuse, puppy mills, hoarders and helpless animals facing euthanizing through no fault of their own. It is with a desire to help the vets and the dogs needing care that Damon comes to Charlotte’s aid with the help of his sister and her farm. It is a book about learning not to let the abuser or horrors of war win and taking back your life.

I couldn’t write this review for a day or two till I could write about some of what happened and believe me something’s were beyond belief. If you have read the first three books in the series then you will get an update on what has happened to the characters we have met before.
