Scout (Scotland) Quintero lived his entire life at a wizard’s compound controlled by his father. All his life he dreamed of being free but could never escape. His knowledge of the world all came from books and one night when he failed to perform the task of opening a portal, he found himself exiled and standing barefoot in the woods surrounding the compound. It was his brother Josue that came to his rescue with money, a cell phone and the number of his brother Macklin. The only thing that bothered him was leaving his sister Kayleigh behind and he was shocked when the portal he attempted for his father worked to bring his sister to him.
With Macklin and his fiancé Jordan’s help Scout and Kayleigh are given a car, charge cards and thanks to Jordan’s magic a place to go where they would be safe, Spinner’s Drift. If you are familiar with the series, Hedge Witches Lonely Hearts Club than you know all about Macklin and Jordan if you are not familiar with that series and you love magic then you shouldn’t miss reading it. Now working at the magic shop and having an apartment he shares with his sister he is finally learning about life and the only thing missing is someone to love. He has his eyes on Lucky (Justin) who works at a coffee-and-book shop but Lucky snubs him and Kayleigh.
Lucky lived in Pennsylvania with his aunt and when she died her apartment was open season for the gangsters in the neighborhood. Then when it was discovered that Lucky had a magical top that would spin and answer the questions, he asked the head of one of the gangs began to use it to predict the winner of the ponies. When he had enough, he ran and ended up in Spinner’s Drift. Although he never took his eyes off Scout fear of caring for someone and losing them kept him from even attempting to speak to him.
In need of an assistant Scout called Lucky up from the audience to help and at that point Lucky couldn’t keep up his avoidance of a man he was very attracted to. When the two finally kiss it is their first, Scout never had a chance while living with his father and Lucky couldn’t risk being attacked if he showed any interest in a man. Together they find what they both were missing in their lives someone to love. They have to be careful because Scout’s father is still searching for him and Kayleigh and the gangsters are still looking for Lucky and his top.
Scout’s magic gets stronger and he discovers a soul trap on the beach and he is pulled in by an evil presence. Lucky is scared to death about losing Scout but Scout is determined to help the souls stuck there find peace. The mystery of the soul trap while trying to protect the island and themselves is a mystery that is going to continue and I can’t wait.
This book is full of surprises, secrets, romance, sex and two characters that I loved and were the reason I was glued to the story.
