Even though I did not read book one I wasn’t lost since the author did a great job of bringing me up to date; but if you haven’t read book one, I would begin there. This is the continuation of Amethyst Quartz’ since she arrived in Portia and was turned into a fairy.

She was brought to Portia to protect her mother and she was expected to marry Prince Angus. She tried many times to escape until she realized that she had fallen in love with Angus and he with her. The biggest problem they had was his evil mother and father who tried to kill Amethyst until their evil ways were discovered and they had to run, but not before they ordered her mother killed.

Angus and Amethyst have not married yet, but their love just keeps growing. Angus decides to hold a masquerade ball so he and Amethyst can put the past behind them and dance the night away. Unfortunately, Amethyst was tired and left alone despite Angus wanting to walk her to her room. She had left her fairy wings in her room along with her staff, two more mistakes that would leave her vulnerable. She is kidnapped, put into a high tower and finds herself surrounded by goblins the enemy of fairies.

She knows that she must escape and takes the chance of using clothes to make a form of rope enabling her to get down. She has no idea where she is or how to return home. This was the beginning of an adventure that would put her life in danger repeatedly. Her attempt at finding help leads to a door in her face. No water, no food, she imagines dying from a lack of both. Then she finds herself meeting a young girl, Danielle from Portia who is heading home, and Amethyst is right behind her.

Taking a boat, they found they headed out only to capsize and finding themselves once again prisoners this time by two vampires. Confined to a room, afraid to eat or drink what they are given, they wait for the moment that they become vampire food. The vampires convince them that they are keeping them for companionship, but that was very hard to swallow. The first attempt to escape did not go well, the second attempt led to Danielle’s death. Amethyst knows that time for her is running out so her third escape forced her to take her life in her own hands, and it worked.

Still trying to find out how to get home she is once again discovered by two goblins who promise her a week of rest, food and clothes if she promises to help them when the week is up. She readily accepts their offer even though she has no idea what is expected of her but after everything she had been through a soft bed food and drink was too hard to turn down. Then she is told what they needed help with, and it was something she would never give them, so yes, another attempted escape.

Running with no idea where she is going, she sees what she hopes is help. Who helps her is not something I will reveal but thus far every time someone tried to help it led to a life-or-death situation, hopefully this time will be different.

Amythyst was a girl used to a castle, all the food she wanted and beautiful clothes. She had everything a girl could want, most importantly love. Each time her life was in danger, and she was ready to give up.She found the courage to keep fighting on. A wonderful story of courage.
