Andrea “Andy” Hale is a police officer in Arizona and her only relationship and the only reason she can’t wait to get home each night it Buck, a wolf. Although a wild animal she trusts him, and he sits with her appearing to understand what she says to him. It has been a long time since she decided to close herself off from a male relationship or any other close relationship. Buck is the one that gives her comfort, he is friend and companion.
Buck is a wolf shifter who like Andy has removed himself from the human world. A tragedy caused him to leave the Twin Moon Ranch, the home of the strongest wolf pack in Desert Southwest and although he swore, he would never return he found himself being pulled back. He has remained in wolf form for a very long time but knows he needs to take his human form if he ever wants to be able to hold Andy, his destiny and his mate.
When he turned it was to discover he was stark naked and could not approach Andy, so it required him to find clothes and breaking into an empty trailer seemed the thing to do. Everything would have been okay except Yvette Andy’s neighbor called her about an intruder and his first face to face with his mate was while she held a gun to him and read him his rights. Thankfully Yvette an artist and a strange woman who believes in the paranormal and the existence of Skinwalkers insists that Roy is just a man in need and convinces Andy to leave him alone.
Yvette gets him a job at the Lazy Q Ranch, the ranch is up for sale and developers are rushing to buy it and build homes destroying the tranquility of the desert around it. Andy assigns Yvette the job of watching out for Roy who she feels she knows but who she doesn’t trust yet. When farm animals are ripped apart Andy is unsure of whether Roy is involved but as she spends more time with him, she knows in her heart that he is one of the good ones.
Andy works at a bar a few nights a week to help the owner whose son has cerebral palsy and when Roy begins spending time there and bonds with the owner’s son there is no doubt that he has a kind heart. He is also handy when there is trouble. A man comes in and somehow creates havoc with fights breaking out and Roy is there to help. That is just a little of the chaos that begins to happen and as a police officer Andy must put her job first and if that mean arresting Roy, so be it.
This was a wonderful story with secrets, surprises, romance and violence. A shifter and a police officer who have tried to remove themselves from other humans are about to learn a lot about each other and discover they do not want to be alone.
