Cowboy Hazard Wagoner is happy working on the H and L ranch. It’s a great place to live and it’s his home. Hazard will do nothing to jeopardize that, even if he has had his eye on the handsome oldest son, Bryce, for a long time.

Bryce Maverick has known he will take over the family ranch practically since the day he was born. Still, he longs for a life outside their small ranching community. But when his father becomes ill, responsibility and duty settle on his shoulders, and it doesn’t help that his younger brother isn’t pulling his weight. The one surprising bright spot is Hazard.

Bryce and Hazard seem to realize their attraction at the same time and Bryce needs the support. Taking over the ranch is hard enough, but a severe dry spell threatens to force him to sell his cattle early and could put the entire operation in jeopardy. Finding a new water supply is key. And it’s Hazard who makes a longshot effort that could change everything for the ranch, as well as any future they might have.

Hazard Wagoner is a ranch hand at one of the biggest and most profitable ranches in the county, a job he loves. His mother also works for the ranch as the accountant and other than the fact that he has lusted after the owner’s son Bryce Maverick his life is happy.

Working on a ranch being gay is something Hazard has kept hidden so acting on his feelings is not something that is possible. Even his mother is unaware he prefers men to women and keeps trying to set him up with a woman she feels is perfect for him.

The owner has two sons Bryce and Willard, Bryce doesn’t hesitate to help if anything needs to be done, and Willard just wants to bring girls to the barn at night for a good old time. Unfortunately, owning a huge ranch that is prosperous depends on more than money and good workers, it all depends on Mother Nature. Without rain it becomes hard to have grazing ground for the cattle and enough water for them.

A dry spell threatens the ranch and the workers because if the cattle need to be sold early it will mean less money and less ranch hands. As Hazard and Bryce finally admit their feelings for each other the ranch is in trouble.

Hazard has an idea that could be the answer to their problems, but it is a long shot, but he doesn’t give up. If his idea works out everything and everyone will be safe. Bryce must accept taking over the ranch while his father heals and although he has lived his whole life on the ranch and knew that one day this would happen, he never really wanted it. Bryce always dreamed of seeing the world but that is no longer possible.

A ranch depends on good workers, money and Mother Nature and Mother Nature is the one thing they have no control over. Lack of rain is causing problems and there doesn’t seem to be any way out of it without water.

As if the lack of rain, his father being ill is not enough problems, Hazard and Bryce must keep their relationship a secret and it is getting harder and harder to find a place where they can be together without being found out.

Bryce and Hazard grow closer and try to come up with ideas to keep the cattle from having to be sold early and having to let some of the ranch hands go but it seems to be an impossible goal.

Mr. Grey gives a very good look at the trials and tribulations of running a ranch and it always comes down to weather. Another wonderful book by one of my favorite authors and I never get tired of his books, they are always a learning experience.
