Tyler Morris is an EMT in Chicago who was recently promoted so his life is looking up. Unfortunately, a visit from a lawyer crashed his plans thanks to his father. He had no relationship with his father and now even in his death he is once again causing trouble to Ty.
Ty is the executor of his estate but with rules, he must live in the large mansion, or the insurance company will cancel the policy, he must wait for probate to be finished before he can sell the house so there is no idea when he can return to his new job in Chicago.
He hated his father before and now even more so.
Now he has to live for a while in his hometown, a place that was happy to see him go. Drunk and dreading his father’s funeral he is met in front of the house by a man and his son. The man is Ollie Kent who has also returned to his hometown with the promise of a job caring for Ty’s father who no longer needs a home-care aid.
Ollie has spent most of his life in the army as a helicopter pilot until four months ago when his son Theo’s mom died. Ollie was never with Theo’s mother, but their son was born through IVF. Now he finds himself a single dad to a son he didn’t spend much time with. In addition, Theo has just finished his last round of chem for his leukemia and Ollie wants to give him a good life but no job and no place to live complicates everything.
Finding a place to rent has proved difficult and the last place he was considering burned down. Ty is also having problems living in the huge house alone where the quiet is mind boggling. With the two men at the end of their ropes they find their answer with Ollie and Theo moving in with Ty.
It doesn’t take long before the three get comfortable with the living arrangements and Ty has found a way to keep busy by helping the coach at the school and teaching some classes about care for someone in the event of injury. Ollie also finds work although it is not what he wanted but it paid the bills. Theo is finding a place for himself after suffering the loss of his mother, friends and comfort in his new school.
This was a wonderful story of two men who have returned to their hometown, one looked at as a hero and one as a hoodlum. The older people in the town have not forgiven Ty for his actions almost two decades ago, actions caused by the grief of losing his mother and him acting out.
There is a lot of overcoming for the two men, Ollie overcoming his feelings for his parents who want to get to know their grandson and one who still suffers from PTSD and one man who wants to return to Chicago and leave the hatred behind him.
