Miles Kearney owns a sailing school on Brookwell Island where he is trying to keep a low profile after an undercover job. He was successful in bring down the Vedra gang and now the Guardian Agency has recommended he return to his hometown where he will be watched over and should be safe.
Miles’ favorite student, well not a student is five-year-old Bryce Trumble who comes to the marina after school so Miles can teach him all about boats and safety. Bryce’s mother is someone Miles is interested in but is afraid to make his feelings known because of the Vedra gang who could come after him.
Molly Trumble, Bryce’s mom was nineteen when she became pregnant with him, she like many girls her age fell hook, line and sinker for a handsome smooth talker. He was a con man and disappeared before she ever got to tell him she was pregnant. Now she lives with Sharon who took her in, supported her through her pregnancy and after and is the aunt of her ex-boyfriend, Tommy.
Bryce loves sailing, the water and spending time with Miles where Molly has a fear of water and being on a boat but hides her fear from her son. Everything is going great for her . She works at Island Bloomers, a flower shop, until she gets a letter in the mail informing her of Tommy’s parents suing her for full custody of Bryce. The one thing they have on their side is money.
When Miles learns about what is going on he is determined to help her and although he doesn’t show it, he is very wealthy from a code he invented and numerous investments. Then Molly is hit in her car causing her to be injured and Miles suspects it might be related to his problem. It doesn’t take long to realize that the gang would just kill him and causing an accident points to it being associated with the custody battle.
The search for answers brings Molly and Miles closer to the point where he confesses his feelings for her. He loves Bryce and Molly but is keeping secrets from her. The custody battle keeps Molly from trying to have a relationship for fear it would hurt her case but how much longer before the truth comes out.
There are secrets, surprises, an adorable five-year-old going on twenty and a small town willing to help in any way they can. It will take time before the problems Miles and Molly face become clear as to the party responsible.
I love Regan Black’s books and every visit to Brookwell Island is an experience full of adventure, suspense and romance.
