Rhys Healy has inherited his Aunt Helen’s house, a house that should be demolished and a new one built in its place. Ryhs lived for years with his aunt when his parent’s divorced. His love for her was so strong that he refused to demolish her home and insisted on refurbishing it.
Xander Petterson has returned to his hometown of Wilcox and as a commercial developer had plans for building new homes on a property he purchased and a house he couldn’t wait to demolish. His only problem was the town council, and the mayor would not give him approval.
The house Xander bought with the hopes of knocking it down and rebuilding was across the way from Rhys’ which he was refurbishing. Xander was attracted to the man and introduced himself and that was the start of a relationship that would hopefully last.
Xander and Rhys learned through a journal of the love affair between Rhys aunt Helen and Xander’s aunt Greta, a love affair that brought them nothing but heartache. It was a time when a woman loving another woman brought all kinds of hatred so when Greta asked Helen to move with her, she turned her down. Both women lived unhappy lives, Greta married but was miserable and Helen stayed single.
Both men realize that they must do better so that they don’t wind up losing out on something they both want, a relationship filled with love. Fortunately, times are different now and nobody in the small-town cares who loves who. The problem is now with the council turning down Xander’s proposal he will return to his job in Portland leaving the two men separated.
Xander wants Rhys to move to Portland with him, but Rhys has his father, stepmother who is going for cancer treatment and his six-year-old stepsisters and leaving his family is a hard pill to swallow.
This was a very sweet story of two men who don’t want to lose what they have just as their aunt’s did. A stepmother with cancer, two small stepsisters and a father who has a lot on his plate can make what would seem a simple decision quite difficult.
There is romance, a family past that proves to be very sad and a future that hopefully will prove to be happy.
