Anna is a barmaid working in her father’s bar and dreams of finding adventure. Her father treats her as a slave, and she works very hard for little money. Everything changes when a group of nine enters the bar dressed like royalty and when she overhears them talking about finding Zancrela, the hidden fortress of myth constructed by scholars believed to be vampires, she sees her chance to fulfill her dream.

Before Anna’s mother died, she was able to read the tomes her mom had received from her father who was a mage. One of them spoke of Zancrela and contained a map and location. Victor and his clan have been searching for the fortress in hopes of having it as their save haven and have so far had no luck. With Anna’s promise that she can find it Victor accepts her help. The rest of his clan are less than happy about her accompanying them and she is going to find out why.

Victor insisted that Anna climb up a tree and not come down and what she witnesses is the clan tearing apart animals and drinking their blood. Now she knows they are vampires, and she could be their next meal. Victor promises to keep her safe but if and when they find Zancrela and she is no longer needed will her safety still be guaranteed.

This was a short story that held my interest from start to finish. I don’t want to reveal too much but guarantee if vampires are a genre, you love than this is a must read. I can’t wait for the next book in the series and see what happens to Anna.
