Gordon Schumacher couldn’t get away from the small town of Sawmill Lake fast enough, but all the big city got him was a dead-end job and a fiancée who dumped him as soon as he came out as bisexual. The last thing Gordon wants is to return to his hometown, so he’s stunned when his estranged grandfather dies and leaves him 300 acres and a house. He plans to sell the land to the first big-box store to make a decent offer, pay off his student loans, and never look back….

But that’s before an eerie sound draws him into the Minnesota woods, where he meets beautiful, awkward, and fiercely intelligent Charlie Gustafson. Charlie is an outcast and a loner, but he shared a passion for owl research with Gordon’s grandfather, Ibrahim. Gordon is drawn to Charlie’s passion and quick wit. He finds himself regretting not knowing his grandfather, and he wants to know Charlie much better. He even discovers his love of banding owls matches Charlie’s.

Gordon knows selling the land where Charlie conducts his research will break Charlie’s heart. Is the attraction growing between them enough to pull Gordon back to the one place he couldn’t wait to escape?

Gordon Schumacher left Sawmill Lake, a small town in Minnesota, as soon as he graduated high school and never intended to return. Unfortunately, he finds himself right back in the town he swore he left for good after learning his estranged grandfather died and left him his house and over three hundred acres of land.
Gordon’s mother and grandfather had a huge fight and stayed angry till their deaths. Now all he wants is to clean out the house and put everything up for sale. Things in his life have not been going well; his fiancé Becky broke up with him when he revealed he was bi claiming using the word bi is just a way of hiding being gay.
When he arrives at the house, he is surprised by how clean it is, everything is in its place and although the furniture is old it is clean. While going over everything he sees a light coming from the woods which he instantly goes to investigate and that is where he meets Charlie Gustafson.
Charlie often worked with Gordon’s grandfather, studying the migrating patterns of Northern saw-whet owls from October to November. Expecting to be thrown off the property when Gordon approached, Charlie was surprised by Gordon’s interest in learning what he was doing.
Charlie has faced bullying throughout his life, which has led him to self-harm as a coping mechanism. He also experiences stuttering when he is nervous. Gordon welcomes him to the property and begins setting the traps and banding them. Working together the two men form a friendship but Charlie rekindles the high school crush he always had on Gordon while Gordon is coming to terms with being bi.
Gordon begins helping to band the owls and loves it, he begins to wonder if he wants to sell the house and property and knows that if he does it will bring an end to Charlie’s banding.
Gordon begins to wonder if his feelings for Charlie are more than friendship but being with a man is so far from what he is used to that he is afraid.
This was a sweet book a gay man and a man who just accepted he is bi. There are surprises and secrets and trying to find the truth about Gordon’s past and why he didn’t have a relationship with his grandfather.
