Hilliard Bauman’s life and his law practice are in Ohio, so when he inherits a home in California, his first instinct is to sell. Then again, his law partner is also his ex-partner, so maybe starting over wouldn’t be so bad. Either way, he needs someone to fix up the house first. That’s where Brian Mayer comes in.
Brian Mayer will do whatever work he can get, whether that means dog walking or painting fences. But in a small town where everyone knows everything about everyone, finding jobs can be difficult—especially if you’ve been wrongly convicted of theft. When Hilliard hires him to fix up his great-aunt’s place, it’s a relief on Brian’s strained bank account… but tests Brian’s heart to its limits.
As Hilliard digs into Brian’s case and the botched investigation of the original crime, things really start heating up—both between him and Brian and in what should’ve been a cold case. This time when cops try to lay the blame at Brian’s feet, he has Hilliard in his corner. Can they solve the mystery, put Brian’s past to rest, and find a new beginning together?

Hilliard Bauman has inherited his great aunt’s house and is trying to figure out what to do with his future. His boyfriend Alan and partner in their law practice cheated on him and bought him out of his share of the business, now he has to start over.
Hilliard hires a handyman, Brian Mayer to make repairs on the home until town gossip reaches his ears. Brian was tried and convicted of stealing and was paroled after serving six months. His business is barely surviving since people are afraid to let him into their homes. Hilliard spoke to Brian and got the whole story leading him to believe that Brian was railroaded. Poor police investigation and a terrible lawyer led to his arrest. Now Hilliard is determined to prove Brian innocent and get his conviction overturned.
Since the theft happened two years ago, finding evidence will be nearly impossible and the only witness to the fact that Brian spent the day with his grandfather is now dead. Beverly, Brian’s grandmother is his biggest supporter, and she is a take charge woman who doesn’t hesitate to do what needs to be done regardless of the fact it could be dangerous.
Hilliard is convinced that they have to revisit the places Brian, and his grandfather visited hoping that someone could remember them or have video proving that Brian was nowhere near the place of the theft.
Brian doesn’t hold much faith in them finding anything it was two years ago, but he is tired of being looked at as a thief. It is like a neon sign hangs over his head reading thief and he is desperate to clear his name. Hilliard doesn’t give up and he Brian and Beverly keep pushing forward.
While the search for the real thief is ongoing Hilliard and Brian begin to have strong feelings for each other, but Hilliard doesn’t know if he is staying or returning to Cleveland. They are two men with pasts that both are trying to heal from and maybe they can help with the healing.
This was a who-done-it and kept me glued to the story. I had no clue who the guilty party was until the end and that to me is the sign of a great writer who can keep you guessing.
This was everything I could want in a mystery, romance, sex, great characters and a miscarriage of justice.
