George Lester, the Duke of Northumberland, flees familial expectations in Britain for the promise of freedom of San Francisco, looking for the chance to be himself. But before he even gets close, a blizzard forces him off the road, and he finds himself freezing half to death in a small town with no motel… with a litter of puppies to look after.

Luckily for George, he also finds Alan.

As the heir to his family’s ranch, Alan Justice knows the burden of being the oldest son. He doesn’t have time to show George, the stranger his brother dragged home, what it takes to be a cowboy. But that very night, George surprises him by helping a mare in distress through a difficult birth. Maybe the duke is made of sterner stuff than Alan thought.

George and Alan keep surprising each other, and every day they grow a little closer. But when George’s responsibilities call him home, Alan finds he’s the one who has something to prove—that he can handle what it means to be the duke’s cowboy.

George Lester the Duke of Northumberland has come to America for some freedom from the pressures of being a royal. George’s brother was programed from birth to be the duke and take over for his father one day while George was free of responsibilities and chose to study to be a vet. Unfortunately, fate had handed George the very life he didn’t want, his brother died and then his father, leaving him the job of caring for the people in town, paying all the employees and making the estate profitable. Selling is not an option since the estate has been declared a Historical Landmark.

It would take a blizzard to bring a change to his life, driving with the hope of finding a place to stay and the snow so blinding it was hard to see he was at a loss as to what to do. Then nature called, so walking to the side of the car he answered the call and found a dog and her four puppies, starving and freezing. Now he had this little family and himself in need of shelter. Finally arriving in a town and seeing a store open he went in to buy supplies. Chip Justice was just about toclose when George inquired about a place to stay for him and the dogs.

Chip made a phone call, and it appeared his call for help was answered by Chip’s mom offering him and the dogs a place for the night. And that was the beginning of George and Alan’s story. Alan, Chip’s older brother, was not happy about having a stranger in his home, but the choice was taken out of his hands by his brother and mother. The next day George intended to be on his way when another blizzard hit and leaving was not possible.

George chipped in with the work since the animals needed caring for and the cattle needed to have hay brought to them. That was when Alan saw George as something more than an arrogant, entitled aristocrat. Both men found they had a lot in common, both wanted a different life than they had, George being a duke and Alan wanting to be free from the ranch he promised his father before he died, he would take care of. It was duty that both men were tied down with and that understanding was the opening for them to push for more.

Alan and George both grew up in different countries and one raised in royalty and one fighting every day to keep the ranch from falling under. Alan found it hard to picture George owning polo ponies, okay I am going to say something that many won’t recognize but it’s my review, so I am going for it, poloponies. For those who remember the Honeymooners you know what I am talking about. A huge estate, butlers and being called your Grace, or duke, made Alan’s head swim but it was the life George lived and will return to.

I have barely touched on everything that went on in this book, the amazing characters, a love that doesn’t seem to stand a chance when an ocean stands between them. I am also in awe of how much knowledge Andrew Grey has about cowboys and royalty, two totally different lifestyles, but I loved every minute of this book as I do all his other books.

If you are not yet a fan of Andrew Grey who writes stories of love and who always manages to get my emotions working overtime, then you are missing out on some amazing reading. There is another royal waiting in the wings for his story and I am anxiously awaiting it.
