Denim Quinn, ex-army, ex-New Orleans police officer and is now an Alliance Security Agent. Her present is filled with emotional pain and physical scars thanks to her abusive husband. With time off from her job she is convinced by her friend Galena, a Scion Firebrand, to join her in Scath for some R&R. A night out brings her face to face with Ram, a satyr and a Firebrand agent and that night would be life changing.
As a satyr Ram needs to feed daily and it is arousal and sex that are required. When he sees Denim, he is intrigued, she is beautiful and is obviously lusting for him. What he never expected was for all his charm to fall flat when she refuses to get involved with him, she is still trying to deal with her internal pain and fear after being abused and there is no doubt that Ram would only be into a once and done. She has had physical pain and emotional pain but is not willing to have her heart broken.
Fighting her attraction to Ram and his for her becomes difficult when they are assigned to work together. She volunteers because aeternals are being shot by humans using tranquilized bullets which have left an incubus dead in an alley. Ram’s determination to protect Denim meets with resistance. She can take care of herself and is well trained, but it is hard for him to just stand by if she is in possible danger.
All the usual characters, Blood Coven descendants, Scion Firebrands and their enemies Cerebus and Dante all appear and continue the fight that began in book one. Cerebus is using Dante, a very wealthy Englishman, for his money and Dante is working behind the scenes to fulfill his own desires. A new group, Arisen Dawn and new drugs that give humans superhuman speed and strength, tranquilized bullets that the aeternals have no control over just add to the already dangerous situation.
The search for Blood Coven descendants continues and has resulted in rescuing one woman who was sold as a slave and continuously raped. Lizette was tested but the results were never discovered. When she is rescued by Jarek, a djinn, her blood is again tested, and she is indeed a Blood Coven descendant.
The Blood Coven descendants are not totally human and are gifted with powers that must reveal themselves. Lizette’s gift is awesome and unexpected and Denim who proves to also be a descendant has an equally amazing gift.
Ram and Denim are a team since her being a descendant elevates her to being a Firebrand. He still wants her, and she still fights her desire. It would take a trip to the grocery store for Denim to see a new side of Ram, a side that changes her mind about him. Ram is still dealing with guilt over the human woman he blames himself for her death. Both he and Denim have known pain in their pasts and have managed to put walls up to protect themselves. The two of them must realize that the heart wants what it wants and eventually the walls will fall.
To say there were surprises would be putting it mildly, because the surprises were mind blowing. There is sex, romance, violence, rape, kidnapping, torture and the continuing fight between good and evil. There was a new character introduced, a character that is only eight and she is amazing and hopefully we will see more of her.
Ram and Denim’s story concludes but the battle with Cerebus is ongoing and getting more deadly. Can’t wait for more.
