This is the third book in the Soldati Hearts series and while it could be read as a stand alone, there is a story arc that continues through that would be less successful without reading them in order.
This story focuses on the quietest of the Soldati, Ezra. He is usually found with his head in a book rather than interacting with others. When retired Orso general Segreti comes to live in the Soldati realm, longtime feelings between these two men, and a plot to kill the king, both come to light.
Charlie Cochet is so good at world building. The Soldati series is no different. Every detail serves a purpose and draws the reader into the story seamlessly. The big “scary” bear shifter is one of my favorites. His integrity and his heart are his greatest attributes. Amid what is a really sweet romance between Segreti and Ezra, Cochet weaves a plot of political intrigue with literal life and death consequences. And she manages to squeeze it all into less than 150 pages!!! This is a great addition to the series.
