Tess Owens is a wolf hunter, it is her job and passion, following in the footsteps of her parents who were killed a year ago. During the full moon she arms herself and goes out hunting and knows for a fact that there is a werewolf nearby.
Jonas Dale has recently moved from Florida where he was a police officer leaving his job and pack behind to protect his teenage sister Gwen. He knows that Tess is a wolf hunter and tries to speak to her. He explains that he is not there to cause trouble, but he is there to protect someone and asks her to just give him time to do what he must do.
All Tess can see is a werewolf, an abomination that must be killed and it is her job to ensure he dies. Tess goes as far as putting a silver knife up to his neck, but he does not raise a hand against her leaving her confused and questioning why she did not just stick the knife all the way through his neck. When Jonas comes face to face with Tess, he is immediately drawn to her and can’t figure out how that could be.
The most amazing thing happens when he speaks in his mind to her never realizing that she can hear him something that only werewolf to werewolf should happen. Each time they run into each other something else strange happens, but his first order of business is protecting his sister. After an attack that killed three of her friends and nearly killed her, she has withdrawn into herself and refuses to speak. Something is after her, something deadly and he will do anything he can to keep her safe. Gwen does not listen to him; she doesn’t speak to him, and he is helpless to get through to her without revealing the danger she is in and causing her more trauma.
Gwen is the only werewolf who can shape-shift into a real wolf and her abilities defy anything known in werewolf history. She could be the future for Weres, and her life is precious in more ways than one.
When Tess sees the white wolf, she has no idea it is a werewolf, there is no scent, and it is a full wolf and begins to believe it is Jonas’s pet. When rogue werewolves in human form come after Tess it is Gwen who manages to overcome one of them keeping him from moving. Tess is able to shoot the other with a silver arrow and everything seems to be under control until Gwen bites off the werewolf’s face.
The more Tess meets Jonas and the more they can converse mind to mind the more she questions her actions and the more she feels like a failure as a hunter betraying the trust her parents had in her. When Tess and Jonas come face to face with the darkness that is after them it is apparent this creature cannot be touched, it is like a black mist that fists, arrows and anything thrown at it just go through.
Jonas keeps so many secrets from Tess, who Gwen is, that Gwen is the white wolf she sees running in the woods and who the creature is after.
Tess and Jonas are wonderful characters and Tess finally learns that all werewolves are not evil just like not all humans are good. There are jaw dropping surprises, secrets and suspense. Every time I receive a book of Linda Thomas-Sundstrom’s I know I am in for a great read and another book I won’t be able to put down until the end.
