Saving him wasn't part of the plan. Falling in love could destroy her.

All her life, Skaja and her Valkyrie sisters have fought against men in the name of justice. But when their attack on the Pits puts her face to face with a man she is unable to kill, let alone hurt, it hurdles her down a path of discovering a secret of her past that will change everything. When she is inexplicably drawn to the man, she realizes that falling in love could cost Skaja her identity, her future, and possibly even her life.

Prince Calle was sold into slavery by his jealous brother, and he would do anything to taste freedom again, even put his trust in a dangerous Valkyrie. Hunted by Valkyries and his brother, Calle must risk everything for the throne, his people, and the woman he should never have allowed himself to fall for.

I have to say I was not expecting much but decided to read this to fill in some time, but I was happily surprised as I was quickly involved in a gripping (and somewhat tragic) story.

The eventual meeting between Prince Calle and Skaja was not the stuff romance is made of since she wanted to kill him more than anything but is prevented from doing so due to an old magic oath (this is not a spoiler since it is told in some of the first pages). Needless to say, they eventually became friends and more.

We have all the making of a great story with a really bad guy (sadly so bad it was almost a stereotype), some tragic secondary events and let us not forget the romance and hopefully a great romantic ending. There are a lot of twists that make this story stand out a bit and while I was not in the mood for another series, this almost seemed rushed a bit but that may be my own indoctrination into fantasy novels that always seem to go for at least 3 novels. So, all things considered 4 Stars for an entertaining story that did keep me involved and characters that were at times frustrating but overall interesting and unique (I mean have you ever read another story about beautiful harpies?).

It was kind of refreshing to get a stand alone novel in any genre these days it seems and almost impossible in fantasy so minor nits aside I was really entertained by this story and almost wanted more but for once I just wanted a good ending to stay that way although I would have liked a good epilogue that showed the future of our couple a few years down the line.
