A Curse of Forever is an incredibly sweet, easy-to-read romance that’s also part-ghost story. It was utterly charming and a surprisingly fast read! (Although, that might be because I couldn’t put it down!)
Laurel is much older than her little sister when the story opens, but she feels like a helpless child around her partying, attention-seeking mother. The most loving and stable relationship she has is with her beloved grandfather. The story opens as Laurel and little sister Carrie hear the eerie tale of Nathaniel, a Puritan-era ghost who was bewitched by the beauty of hisNew England town. Little did he know that his love was an actual witch and the paramour of Satan himself. When Nathaniel catches the unholy love affair playing out by the lighthouse, it’s said that the devil and the witch killed him. His lonely ghost still haunts the lighthouse. Laurel is sure the story is just that— a story. That is, until her little sister starts a fire that destroys the family’s favorite camping spot in an attempt to stop the “bad man” she spies near the lighthouse.
The fire and Carrie’s story prompt Laurel’s mother to cut ties with her father. Years later, Laurel is summoned back to the same little town for her grandfather’s funeral, and that’s when she finds out that the ghost story her grandpa told her was all too real— sort of. Nathaniel is still haunting the lighthouse— but he’s no ghost!
Nathaniel is in the flesh but trapped between life and death, bound to the lighthouse. He’s still easily beguiled by beauty. He watched over Laurel’s family for years and can’t believe it when she stumbles into his lighthouse and doesn’t run off screaming. The two lonely souls become fast friends. Nathaniel knows that he cannot hope that a sweet young mortal will fall for him, but his heart won’t listen. He thrills at Laurel’s company, but believes that a domineering local, Jacob, is also trying to gain her love. He is willing to step aside for a mortal to ensure Laurel has a happy future.
Laurel knows that it’s crazy, but she far prefers the otherworldly Nathaniel to the too-slick Jacob. Digging deep into her family’s past, Laurel discovers the exact nature of Nathaniel’s curse— laid upon him by her ancestor! The curse can only be broken if Nathaniel’s former love gives her heart to him. Since she’s long gone, only one of her ancestors can set him free. Laurel manages to connect the dots, but so does the truly creepy Jacob. Will Laurel be able to set Nathaniel free from his lighthouse prison before Jacob finds a way to destroy Laurel’s immortal lover?
A Curse of Forever is a sweet, small-town delight blended with just the right amount of ghostly goodness. It is a simple but satisfying tale. You’ll be smiling and sighing happily by the time you reach the ending!
