Dr. Ginny Reese returned to her small town of Greenbrier in the Blue Ridge Mountains to help care for her sick father giving up her position as a veterinarian in a huge clinic. When her dad died, she had the opportunity to leave but she knew that as a house-call veterinarian she was needed by those who could not afford a private veterinarian and those who did not have the means to travel to a vet.
With her German shepherd Remington along on her visits she gives her patients and their owners all the attention she possibly can. She feeds a pack of feral cats that she had spayed and neutered, cares for her friend’s horses and her friend’s mean-spirited cat Ming. It was her visit to Amanda to treat Ming that would be the beginning of a change in her life she could never have envisioned. She arrived to find Amanda laying at the bottom of her pool dead and an attempt to bring her body up failed.
As if finding her friend dead wasn’t shocking enough when the sheriff arrives it is none other than her ex-boyfriend Joe Donegan who couldn’t leave town fast enough and is now back. Well, the hits just keep on coming because at the reading of Amanda’s will Ginny discovers she is the sole beneficiary of Amanda’s huge estate leaving her husband who suddenly appeared and her brother left out in the cold.
Amanda’s brother intends to contest the will no matter how long it takes and making matters worse Ginny has a bullseye on her back by all the people involved in wanting Amanda’s property sold for a new development and a brother and husband who want Ginny out of the way. Not bad enough she is now a person of interest in Amanda’s death.
In spite of Joe’s insistence that she stay out of the investigation she is determined to find Amanda’s killer and clear her name and even an attempt to run her off the road and her home burning to the ground can’t deter her. Ginny is a force to recon with when her animals are in danger and when a friend is killed a lesson Amanda’s husband learned the hard way when he threatened Ginny’s dog and found his family jewels in danger of being ripped from his body.
This was a book that had everything I love, amazing characters, animals big and small lol, a mystery and an ending that was quite a surprise. I can’t wait for more Ginny Reese mysteries and hopefully the wait won’t be too long.
