It’s hard to have a love life when you don’t have a pulse.
All that changes for Fred Wilder when he meets Elliam Sturm a few weeks after Sloane Beaumont first becomes a Starkiller and kills a god.
As a ghoul, Fred Wilder needs very specialized medicine to combat his constantly rotting body. As a thief, Fred needs that body in good condition. Fortunately for him, Ell does the impossible: brings new life to Fred’s dead flesh.
Just being around Ell makes Fred feel alive for the first time since his untimely demise. He’s so charmed by Ell’s bright personality and shared love of obscure fantasy that he doesn’t think twice about the source of Ell’s power. But this is Archersville, so their blossoming romance is threatened by a dangerous painting that could awaken an ancient god who could destroy the world. Now the fate of billions hinges on Fred completing a daring heist.
But as Fred and Ell work together, the true depth of Ell’s power becomes impossible for Fred to ignore, and he’s forced to accept that perhaps the biggest mystery—and the biggest threat—has been with them all along….

Firstly, this book ends in a cliffhanger, so if you’re not great with those then I suggest waiting for the next book to come out.
I really enjoy this universe that K.L. Hiers has created. A human world that has different and forgotten religions and gods, some of which seems to be making a reappearance back in the real world. Loch and Sloane are the series main MCs but this time we focus on Fred, a friend of Lochlain’s, who has been a ghoul ever since he died on a heist five years ago. One of the side effects of being a ghoul is rotting flesh and he is in serious need of some help. It’s bad enough his Dr. can’t help but she can refer him to a specialist but it’s a no questions asked kind of deal. Ell is like no other man Fred has ever met, and he’s no idea just how true that is. Ell keeps very much to himself after learning things about himself, to keep others safe, but Fred is a welcome and beautiful change to his day.
There is an immediate attraction on both sides and Ell is completely endearing in his innocence and enthusiasm. Fred can’t quite grasp the changes to his body being brought around by Ell but he’s not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Things move quickly and intensely for the couple whilst trying to keep themselves alive after Fred’s job goes wrong and leaves him injured and with the culprits on the hunt for him. Who knew he’d been hired to steal paintings that could bring about the end of the world? Ell’s unknown origin is quite the mystery, especially with the new developments through the book that are quite evenly split between good and not so great. The good definitely helps when it comes to when Ell and Fred explore so much together, all new experiences for Ell after being shut away from people for so long. There’s a strong grumpy/sunshine dynamic between the two as well as an age gap and opposites attract.
I enjoyed the plot development through the book. A lot of time is devoted to what’s happening between the MC’s but it’s also important that a plot to raise a god that wants to end the world be stopped. There’s a lot of uncertainty around whether their attempt to stop it will be successful but it’s surely entertaining when they try, at least until the big bad comes out to play. Then we’re just left with shock, awe and a ‘what the hell was that?’ moment. Fred’s commitment to keeping Ell safe and happy is a big part of their relationship but some things just can’t be stopped.
The way the book ends leaves me desperate to know how things go next for the group. You have Loch, Sloane, Lochlain, Robert, Fred, Lynette and Milo, all a found family of sorts who have come together in such unusual circumstances but work to keep the crazy from affecting the rest of the world.
