After ten years of separation, Tessa and Alec are called to the deathbed of Tessa’s father and tasked with solving a mystery that points to WWII, the Nazi régime, and the shadowy world of the Djinn. Although their passion still burns, forgiveness requires more than desire.

Alec, the Riddle King to the Defensori, is used to shutting out the world and working on his puzzles alone. But this time, he can’t shut Tessa out. This time, he needs his estranged wife's help. Tessa and her gift hold the key, and failure could cost her sanity…or her life.

Insecurity, immaturity, and misunderstanding drove them apart. Can they rebuild their shattered trust and work together to rescue a captive Djinni, stay one step ahead of the servants of the Fallen, and save their marriage along with Tessa’s life?

Ten years ago Alec McAllister and Contessa (Tessa) were married and very much in love. Alec was known as the Puzzle King to the Defensori the military arm of the Earthbound and he got so absorbed in what he was doing that he forgot everything else including the most important day in Tessa’s life. Tessa wrote a symphony that was being played and everyone was there except the one she really wanted, her husband Alec. Once again Alec got caught up in a puzzle he wanted to solve and lost all track of time failing her once again. When Tessa arrived home she was disheveled and hugging another man and that was all it took for Alec to run to all manner of conclusions. Convinced his wife was just with another man having sex he didn’t ask questions he just began ranting and raving and accusing and that was when they separated.

Now Tessa and Alec find themselves at her dying dad’s bedside. Tessa’s father was an upper echelon angel until the woman he loved got pregnant with his child and he became mortal. Now as a mortal his time is almost up and he makes Alec promise to be with Tessa during her time of grief inspite of the fact that he is probably the last person in the world she wants to be around, but he will not break his promise to his old friend and mentor.

Tessa has the gift of psychometry, causing her to wear gloves so that visions and thoughts of others don’t overpower her. Still angry with Alec she can’t deny that she finds comfort when he holds her. She has realized over the years that she was equally to blame for what destroyed their marriage. She didn’t deny having an affair sure that he would get jealous and fight for her but his pride didn’t allow it. Immaturity, pride and stubborness and a lack of communication kept two people deeply in love from being with each other. Ten long years have gone have they finally grown up enough to talk before reacting?

In addition to plotting to get his daughter Tessa and her husband Alec back together her father had something else more serious in mind. A captured Djinni, Nazi’s and stolen treasure will put Tessa in danger and now more than ever Alec will have to use his gift for solving puzzles to good use, Tessa’s life could depend on it.

I love the Earthbound series and although they do not have to be read in order I suggest doing so because each book is a story worth reading.
