This was more than just a vampire story it is a story of love. Light was turned by what is referred to as his Author, Ruby who he stayed with for decades and loved. He always needed attention and love from Ruby but it was something she was incapable of giving. Everything changed for Light when Ruby decided to return to London to be with her family, her brothers the twins.

The twins owned a nightclub and a radio station and from the moment they arrived Light was pushed into the background. He worked for the brothers at their club and his life changed when he heard a woman sing. Kathy Freeborn was a singer newly signed to the twin’s label and when he first introduced himself to her she made it quite clear she wanted nothing to do with him. He tried everything he could to get close to her but it took saving her cousin Susan from becoming another vampire’s dinner to do the trick. Light did not come out of the confrontation unscathed and Susan took him home to help him.

When it was Kathy who answered the door, her reaction was once again to slam it in his face but Susan explained that his injuries were the result of saving her life. Light finally got into Kathy’s good graces and their relationship progressed from there. Now it has been fifty years since Light and Kathy came together and although she refused to be turned he stayed with her going from husband to her boy toy to mother and grandmother. Now he watches as she lays in bed with no memory of who he is and what their life together was like. To those assigned to care for her during the day he is a grandson looking out for his grandmother never realizing that he was looking out for the woman he has never stopped loving.

Day after day he watches hoping for any sign that she might remember him, a smile or a look but it rarely happens. He decided to tell his story to her leaving nothing out as he did when she was aware of everything. He at times left things unsaid or sugar coated them but now he wanted to clear the air even though she would have no way of knowing what he was saying. He had to confess that he loved Ruby as well as her but it was she that changed him from a vampire killing to survive to a vampire drinking pigs blood to survive.

This book is Light’s story from the time Ruby came into his life and changed him to the time in between when they hunted together without a care in the world until Kathy changed him for good. He began to realize that first lifers were not that different from blood lifers and that blood lifers were not the only monsters. All you have to do is read the newspapers or turn on the television to know that humans are every bit as brutal as anyone else. The book is written in British language and at first it was a little difficult to understand, to me a nut is something you eat but in this book, it means head.

The love that Light had for Kathy was so beautiful, he never saw her physical being only her heart and soul. I can’t wait to start book two and luckily as soon as I finish this review I will.
