“Judging by his silence, I hadn’t consoled him.” — Bridging Hope
Greyson McCoy wrote a series, romances that are bridges of the heart. These are quick reads, under two hours. I’m all about the epic and the serials but every once in a while, what I want is a short story or a standalone. An amuse bouche, a palate cleanser, if you will.
Bridging Hope is a messy (in that way life is messy) but sweet and conflicted journey between two very different men who are unexpectedly thrown together after the death a woman. The woman is the sister of Pierce Simms. Simms is quite a driven, ambitious man. You know the deal with driven people, they leave home and don’t look back. Except for Simms. He looks back. Although he swore he’d never return to the old family farm or the people there, he does. Because his sister needs him. She’s quite ill and she does die. But she leaves two children behind.
Simms is more than willing to step up and take them in. He loves them dearly. Nonetheless, it becomes apparent, not expecting her brother to ever return, that his sister had previously named a guardian for the children should she become incapacitated or die. The guardian is her one-time high school boyfriend, Dalton O’Dell.
O’Dell is in a bit of a crisis. He’s lost his teaching grant. With his life suddenly in turmoil and out of a job, he’s living with friends to make ends meet. But when he learns he’s been named guardian, he’s a man who knows what he must do whether his life is in chaos or not.
Short stories are quick to set the plot, create the conflict, and then resolve it. The interesting ones also throw in a plot twist. It’s way too easy to give away the tale in a short story. So, if you want to know more, well, get the book. Root for the good guy, family, and love. In the end, it’s always love that bridges our lives.
A four-star read about bridging hearts regardless of how long the journey takes.
