Finally back in Massachusetts, vegan werewolf Kyle Slidell hopes for a peaceful life with his mate, Anax Tobias Rogan. But the pressure of ruling all werewolves in the United States is getting to Tobias. Kyle worries that the gentle, compassionate man he fell in love with is becoming like the previous Anax: a power-mad ruler who is all too eager to kill.
An old friend comes to Tobias for help in rescuing his mate from an abusive Alpha. As the extent of the Alpha’s crimes comes to light and the Alpha flees, Tobias sentences him to death. And he seems all too eager to carry out the sentence.
As they and their guards search for the fugitive Alpha, Kyle will do anything to ensure that the power within Tobias doesn’t take control—including becoming the Anax’s enforcer.

This book is in Kyle’s PV, so we get his first-hand account of what is going on. Tobias and Kyle have relocated back to Massachusetts, back among friends only constant death threats against Tobias has put both men in fear. It is a full moon and time for the hunt with all the Alphas at the regional meeting with Zane.
Always expecting danger while in wolf form a wolf comes running out of the woods heading for Tobias. Quinn and Kyle are there to stop the wolf and soon find out who he is and what he wanted. It is Connor the Peacekeeper for the City Pack who had been noticeably missing and had no intention of attacking. He was being chased by the Berkshires Pack trackers. His mate was not there Leary the Alpha took her with him to the regional meeting.
Connor was accused of entering the pack territory without permission which was a lie because both Connor’s Alpha and the Berkshires Pack Alpha gave permission. This information and the fact that Jack Leary lied to his men and had Connor’s mate, Alisa changed by Jack had shocked Tobias. This was the first time that Tobias learned about the abuse Leary inflicted on the women in the pack. Mated or not whatever woman he wanted he believed belonged to him and if they wanted him to stop, they had to supply another woman, that is what happened to Alisa.
Leary had also made threats against Kyle, Justin, his wife and their newborn son. Now Tobias is determined to see him dead but only if they can find him since he ran from the regional meeting. Tobias is determined to see Leary die and Kyle fears that the pressure of being the Anax is getting to him. If not for Kyle keeping him under control, there is no way of knowing if Tobias would become power hungry.
Quinn sees danger, he sees red which indicates there will be death and that more guards are needed. Unfortunately, there is no time to get more guards, and Tobias asks Justin from City Pack if he can borrow two of his, and of course the answer is yes. With the extra guards they head out to find Leary and the Alpha of the Champlain Pack who is protecting him.
As with all the books in this series Tobias and Kyle face danger, betrayals, secrets and times when their bond comes close to separating them. While Tobias comes close to exerting his power Kyle is there to reel him back.
Tobias wants to remove all those in a high rank from abusing the members of their pack of abuse. It is his desire to bring changes, but it is something that will not come easily since there are so many werewolves out there who want him dead.
This is a series I can’t recommend highly enough amazing characters, suspense, threats and a constant attempt by Tobias to make things better.
