Charles Grimes hasn’t celebrated Christmas in years, so spending December in San Francisco while keeping an eye out for monsters sounds like an easy way to earn a few bucks. He should have learned by now that nothing is ever easy—not his job, not his existence as the son of an angel, and not his relationship with a formerly captive demon. It’s going to take more than a few rounds of Jingle Bells to make Charles feel the joys of the season.

A child of a human and an angel, an out of work nightmare demon, and Christmas in San Francisco. Sounds like the beginning of a great novella by Kim Fielding and you would be right.
Charles Grimes, an agent for the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs, is asked to help out in San Francisco after another agent is injured on the job. With WW2 efforts ramping up, the resources are limited. The adventures that ensue for Charles and his demon lover, Tenreal, are unexpected and bring revelations about more than just why people are disappearing.
The relationship between Charles and Ten is the best part of this story. Watching these two men navigate their emotions and figure out what these positive feelings mean, is so heartwarming. Their jagged pieces fit each other so well.
Only Kim Fielding could weave in Hanukkah, Christmas, and a paranormal mystery into a romance. It is a great read and a fun addition to the Bureau series.
