Boone Collins and Shane Butler are two of rock music’s brightest stars today. Their grandfathers founded a powerhouse rock supergroup that ruled the airwaves in the late 1970s, and the grandsons grew up in their shadows to become frontmen of their own successful bands. The epic rivalry between Boone and Shane is notorious, and it’s about to blow up.
When Shane’s grandfather Bruce inducts his deceased bandmate into the Rock Music Hall of Fame, he admits to the world that he wrote the band’s biggest hit about his best friend’s widow—Boone’s grandmother Vera Jean. The two want to rekindle their relationship, and their grandsons are determined to keep them apart. Only, working together for a common goal reveals surprising similarities between the rock stars as well as a chemistry they cannot ignore. Shane sees behind Boone’s glittery facade to the secrets he hides from his bandmates, and Boone is there to pick up the pieces when Shane’s professional world implodes. Together, they plot a musical collaboration to celebrate their grandfathers’ accomplishments instead of fighting—a star-studded tribute at the storied Rocktoberfest event in the Nevada desert—but will being in the spotlight prove to be too much for their fledgling romance to handle?

Once upon a time there was a sweet six year old boy, Boone Collins, who had faced so much heart break with his parents. Luckily for Boone he had two wonderful grandparents, John Boone and Vera Jean Collins. John Boone was British born and became a super singer/guitarist, rock star of the 70’s group California. He married the Academy Award Winner, British actress Vera Jean.
Regardless of all the trauma and tragedy Boone had faced, he became a rock star himself. For a thirty year old he was an old soul and he followed in his grandfathers footsteps, when it came to music. John and Vera supported and were positive influences in his life. Vera Jean held their lives together but John passed away from cancer. Boone didn’t leave his grandmother and they lived together in a beautiful house. Boone eventually had his own group, “Stellar”, with friends Annie and Brandon.
There were always parties, social goings on and rehearsals at the house of John and Vera. Bruce Duncan would bring his grandson, Shane Butler, often to the get togethers and there Shane and Boone met. Boone was two years younger then Shane but he admired Shane and followed him around. Shane didn’t care for that at all. Shane’s grandfather, Bruce was a long time band mate of John and California. John and Bruce had a feud and John went out on his own and California was eventually, no more. One thing they did right was keep their differences out of the rumor mill and the public eye.
For twenty years Bruce toured until fences were mended and he reunited with the former California members. The group made a massive and successful comeback as Brothers. Bruce even thought of having an anniversary tour at some point. Bruce now in his seventies, has his own condo and lives by himself. He was married and divorced twice, he faced a lot of issues especially alcoholism but he got himself straight.
Shane Butler became a very good musician, and writer in his own right. Bruce was proud of Shane but Shane’s mother wasn’t. She and Shane’s father became estranged after he left home fifteen years ago. His mother believed he would amount to nothing if he pursued music. Shane believed his grandfather Bruce should have earned more credit with California. Bruce co-wrote many of the songs with John. Even though Bruce and Shane have their own condo’s, Shane is very much in his grandfather’s life. Anything his grandfather needs Shane is there for him.
On this day, there was a big event taking place. The Rock Hall Induction Ceremony honoring California and John Boone. Boone Collins and Bruce Duncan were collaborating with the musical presentation and Shane was not happy about that. He and Boone had a feud of there own going on. Boone could never figure out why. He was always complimentary of Shane and believed Shane could be so much better as singer/musician of the “Wicked Soul’s”.
At the ceremony Vera Jean and Boone have made their entrance. Bruce can’t hold back, he needs to talk with Vera Jean. Shane’s not happy and afraid Bruce will embarrass himself. Vera Jean and Bruce have been keeping secrets. When the song “Paisley” is performed Boone and Shane find out some news that will turn their worlds upside down. What will they do? Who will be the adults in this situation? Can Boone and Shane make an effort to get along?
R.L. Merrill creates this wonderful story “Feuds & Interludes” for “The Road to Rocktoberfest 2024”. I absolutely loved it! The story brings out the issues of addiction, health problems, abuse and caring for those who just aren’t elderly but younger also. Boone Collins is so lovable. He’s really a sweet guy and tries to really look on the bright and happy side of all things, regardless of his situation. He keeps his issues to himself even though he has people around him who care. Shane Butler is a bit controlling and everything has to be just right. He’s more serious than Boone. But being serious and controlling held him back. There was so much more that Shane could do. Boone and others noticed it too. Boone has a playfulness and knows how to get under Shane’s skin. When the spark ignites between them it’s amazing to watch what develops. When things go haywire for Shane, there will be a lesson to learn of acceptance.
I loved Vera Jean and Bruce. They proved that it’s not age that counts but the love that’s in their hearts. They were going to live the rest of their lives to the fullest and make up for lost time.
Annie and Brandon Thompson, are the twins, in Stellar a group of three. They are there for Boone and support him to the fullest. They also get on him when things go wrong.
I double-highly recommend R.L. Merrill’s “Feuds & Interludes” it caught me off guard and is my favorite novel from “The Road to Rocktoberfest 2024”. The tale is heart-warming, a little tear jerker, humorous, and a lot steamy. The intimate moments are beautifully written, there are great lyrics, wonderful characters and a contrast of couples of a different time and era. “Feuds & Interludes” is an excellent story and R.L. Merrill did not disappoint.
