The cold isn’t the only killer in the wilderness.

Benjamin Coulton is a tracker employed by the Consortium, the ruling counsel of vampires. When he’s sent to investigate a rogue vampire killing indiscriminately in a remote region of Alaska. Bad weather hampers his effort and he loses the vampire he’s been tasked to find.
Leon Davis and his friend Trevor agreed to be winter caretakers for several cabins and a fishing lodge, thinking it would be easy money. They settle into their daily routine of checking the cabins for animal break-ins, or broken water pipes, and prepare for a long winter.

Until a run in with a vampire changes everything.

Ben finds a newly turned vampire left for dead by the rogue vampire, and suddenly Ben's mission changes course. In the freezing wilderness of Alaska, he uncovers more truths and the mate he'd always longed for... and now the vampire he was tasked to find is hunting them.

This is the second book in this series and although the books are standalone, I would still recommend reading them to fully understand everything that is going on and to know the characters.

Benjamin Coulton (Ben) is on another assignment from the Consortium. This time it will take him to the Yukon territory to find a rogue vampire. When he arrives, he must deal with the cold which is not something that has any effect on vampires, but the amount of snow will have an influence on when Ben can leave. The snow is so thick that he will be stranded till the spring.

Ben finds the rogue, but he misses capturing him. Although he didn’t catch the rogue, he did find what he left behind, a dead man and a man close to death but turned. The newly turned vampire drinks some blood, the man is coherent but has no memory of what happened. He knows his name is Leon and the dead man was his friend. Leon had come to make money as the caretaker watching over bungalows deserted in the winter.

Ben feels protective of Leon who is a newborn that must learn how to survive in his new life, so he doesn’t fall into blood lust. Leon trusts Ben and listens to him but refuses to kill to eat. Ben teaches him that he can hunt animals and feed from them and never has to drink from a human.

When Leon is again attacked Ben realizes who the rogue is, it is Samuel. If you read book one, then you know Samuel was responsible for the drug problem and the deaths of many on his last mission. It was Lucas and Brennan’s story and every bit as wonderful as Leon and Ben’s.

Samuel was captured by the Consortium but now he has done the impossible, escaped from his confinement. He drinks from humans and vampires and enjoys torturing his victims. The problem with catching Samuel is that he has the power to force his will on other vampires, forcing them to do his bidding. For decades Ben practiced how to fight Samuel’s control, but Leon finds himself at his mercy.

Ben is desperate to protect Leon who he feels is his mate, a mate he has wanted for decades and now that he has found him has no intention of losing him to Samuel.
A lot happens during the time Ben, Leon and another vampire who fell under Samuel’s spell till he was nearly dead try to survive the snow, being forced to hunt for blood which is badly needed and finding and destroying Samuel.

Violence, surprises, secrets, lies and romance are everything you would expect in a vampire story. Well, I loved the first two books in this series and have no doubt I will love book three as well so I can’t wait to start it.
