Owen Hart’s wits—and his supernatural ability to read others’ emotions—give him an edge at the poker table, but his luck runs out when he gets hauled in to explain his suspicious success to the owner of Spades Casino. Or does it?

Leo Ellis is a successful businessman and criminal who launders money for other mobsters. Owen fascinates him. Sensing there is more to the man than meets the eye, Leo offers him a job as a waiter/sex-optional escort and moves Owen in.

But things get complicated when Leo’s fascination deepens into something else, and then even more so when they fall into bed together.

Having dealt with years of drama and secrecy, Owen feels vulnerable opening up to Leo. The whirlwind romance also puts Leo into a position that he never anticipated. Their emotions are tested further when Leo's most dangerous rival kidnaps Owen to use as a bargaining chip. Will Leo and his men be able to rescue him and keep him safe? Will Leo's second-in-command ever get enough of Owen's cupcakes? With any luck, love may be in the cards at Spades.

War is raging between humans and aliens and Auren has been recruited to Vesperion to join the fight. When it becomes obvious that the humans are not going to win, he has two choices fight or flight and since he is not a hero he chooses flight. Auren does make it out and I won’t reveal how it is something that must read. I will reveal that he is no longer human but an android.

He found himself a prisoner on a pirate ship and was saved by another prisoner, Lupo. Unsure of whether he trusts Lupo or not, accompanying him is a no brainer. Stealing a ship the two take off for Lupo’s home planet, Thestle. Lupo was betrayed by the man he loved Bartie and now all he wants is revenge.

Little by little Auren begins to trust Lupo and is happy to follow him. While investigating the ship Auren discovers a cryopod with someone in it and although Lupo wants to be cautious Auren frees the person inside. It was a mistake that Auren realized immediately upon seeing who was in the cryopod, a Keth, the aliens that are destroying humans.

The Keth is called Ophion and is reptilian and although he refers to Lupo and Auren as abominations he does not attack. Ophion will become part of the crew when Auren and Lupo treat him with respect and kindness. Ophion was also a prisoner of the Pirate King and lost his two bonded mates, was tortured and put into the cryopod.

Now the adventure begins with the search for Bartie, but it will be a search that will prove to be dangerous. The Pirate King’s Battle Cruiser catches up with them and once again they are all in the hands of the beast responsible for their torture. He is a spidery cyborg with a human head, Lupo, Auren and Ophion are not going down without a fight and that fight is also something that you must read to get the full impact.

Making it to Thestle they find themselves in the middle of the war with the Keth and Bartie has moved on. Once again, they escape and head to the new destination where Bartie is supposed to be only this time, they come face to face with him and it proves deadly.
Searching for Bartie, staying one step ahead of the Keth is only a small portion of the dangerous situations the three find themselves in and there is more trouble ahead for them in book two and three.

Suspense, romance, violence and wonderful main characters. I am not a fan of sci-fi books, movies and tv yes but occasionally, I read one like this and I am drawn in. I read the book in one sitting and although there were times, I didn’t understand everything it didn’t distract from the overall story.
