What do you do if you are the doctor of your pack and find yourself unable to save the people you care about? In Jason Ayers’ case, he goes to an illegal underground fight club to beat his frustration and guilt away. Of course it only works for a short term.
Jason was unable to save his Alpha, and now his own father who was attacked by Nero is presently in a coma. Jason’s hands are tied due to his inability to bring his patient’s to the hospital where a simple blood test could reveal their well-kept secret—they are shifters. Now his father lays dying in his home with Jason’s mother sitting vigil at his bedside waiting for him to wake up. His father’s attack was all due to Jason’s invitation to a Nero scientist to save Nadya, a shifter he thought could be his. That was the incident that changed everything for Jason, who used to visit the fight club once a month and who now goes every time he feels stressed out.
Kilani Akamu was luckily available after Jason’s father was attacked and together they were able to get him breathing. When she approaches Jason as to why his father was not admitted to the hospital as he promised, she becomes enraged. Jason is just unfeeling doctor with a God complex. She has had only bad relationships with doctors and she is now adding Jason to the list. It isn’t until she touches Jason that he realizes she is his mate. For years Jason thought the idea of one person being only for you was a fable passed down from generation to generation until now. What he doesn’t realize is that Kilani is in trouble and Nero is after her.
Kilani found her roommate, Grace, disemboweled in their apartment. Now she is a loose thread that needs to be clipped. Grace was dating Sebastian, the son of Nero’s president. She was able to get away only with his help. Nero is close and Sebastian told her where to go and who to see. She winds up seeking Adam, the new Alpha of the pack, and she finds herself with Jason, who is obsessed with helping her. Jason has no idea Kilani has psychic abilities. She is able to see into the future for a few minutes just enough to let her know something is going to happen, but not always enough to change it.
I don’t want to go into too much detail because I do not want to inadvertently give anything away. The story has romance, sex, betrayals, secrets, and surprises. We reunite with all the other characters we read about in the prior books which I loved. Although this is a series that doesn’t have to be read in order, you would be depriving yourself of some very romantic stories filled with hot shifters.
