Travis McGill has suffered; it has been a year since his wife was murdered and his four-year-old son witnessed it. Since the murder his son Richie has not spoken a word and Travis fears the man responsible, once his best friend, Dean Ratliff, might come after him since he is the only witness to the crime. Travis refuses to go into WitSec and is determined to one day see Ratliff pay the price for what he has done.
Fortunately, Travis has the money to buy new identities for him and his son and to buy a ranch in Montana where they will be far away from where everything happened. Travis now known as Jack Saunders and Richie now known as Jamie are beginning their new lives and Jack hopes with the beginning of kindergarten that his son will finally begin to speak.
Jamie is scared when they arrive at the school, at such a young age he has witnessed something nobody should and being separated from his father is the last thing he wants to do. Everything changes for both Jamie and Jack when a beautiful woman, Gabby Cooper, Jamie’s new teacher comes to the rescue and knows just what to do to get Jamie comfortable. Jamie becomes very attached to Gabby and so does his father.
Gabby wins Jamie’s trust and Jack, well Jack just wants to spend time with her both for himself and his son. Before long Jack reveals who he really is and why he has fled to Montana. While Gabby, Jamie and Jack are getting close Ratliff has been hiring private investigators and finally he is successful. Jack, Jamie and Gabby are now in Ratliff’s sights and Jamie might once again witness someone he has grown to lve become another victim.
This was a beautiful story of three people who have suffered in the past, Gabby lost her husband seven years ago in Afghanistan, Jack lost his wife to murder and his son mute and living in fear. These are three people who deserve a chance at happiness but they also have to survive Ratliff.
If you, like me are a fan of Ms. Woolf’s then I don’t have to tell you that this is a book you will love and if you are not yet a fan than this book will make you one.
