The love of Jules life is gone, and she is determined to find out what happened to him. Her quest to discover what caused Sam’s death leads her on a journey to confront more than just her personal demons because something supernatural is trying to stop Jules from finding the truth.
Jules’ poignant narrative of her journey is filled with her sense of determination to make sense of past events. At times the narrative feels a bit disjointed and confusing which reflects Jules’ state of mind as she contemplates her past with Sam. The memories unfolded in the narrative bring to light, in vibrant details, many of the unique characteristics of the culture and attitude of the 70’s in the United States and in particular, Texas. The vibrant settings of the past and present are supported by the clearly defined cast of characters. Jules’ character is infused with a quality of realness that convinces the reader that they are on the journey with her, and the individuals Jules’ encounters along the way have that same quality that leaves the reader feeling like they have met that person.
A few things about this book could give the reader pause. Sometimes, Sam seems a little too perfect to be real, but eventually the quirks of his character are unveiled to the reader as Jules discovers them herself. A bit more proofreading and editing might clarify some of the confusing moments in Jules’ narrative, but the persistent intensity of the story make it easy to skip over any minor flaws in editing.
The conflict in this book had some very dark and brutal moments. The ultimate resolution to those conflicts was satisfying, but a few unanswered questions leave room for another possible story. Clairvoyant dogs, ghost lovers, evil beings, and disco are all packed into this vibrant, sensual, journey about finding self acceptance, peace, and hopefully, happiness.
