Howard Justinian was born blind and has lived his life in darkness. Things that the sighted take for granted such as tying your shoes, cooking a meal, knowing colors and how to show expressions is an every day challenge to Howard. Howard left his family home to work at being independent only he found himself with a boyfriend, Cedric, who wanted total control over everything Howard did. When Howard try to assert himself Cedric did the unthinkable he drove Howard to the side of a busy highway and left him, convinced that Howard would see that he needed help especially from him.
Without his cane which he left in Cedric’s car and alone listening to cars shoot by he is scared to death, but fortunately a good samaritan stops to help him. His name is Gordon Jarrett and unknowingly this sorry attempt by Cedric to teach Howard a lesson brings about a change in Gordy and Howard’s life. Gordy is the Town Engineer and Howard works on computer vocalizations since voices are his means of surviving. Howard lives by voice, feel and the use of his hands and he sees people on the inside and not the outside. He immediately feels that Gordy is someone special but knows that being with a blind person is not an easy life.
Howard’s only family is his sister Lizzy and his six year old niece Sophia. He is also blessed with wonderful friends, friends that we met in “Love Comes Silently”, Patrick, Ken and adorable Hanna. They are always there to help Howard when he needs them. Gordy also begins to appear more and more in Howard’s life. Is he one of those people who don’t judge a person because they are not totally capable of caring for themselves?
But, as things are looking up for Howard tragedy strikes and he finds himself needing more help then he could ever have imagined. I don’t want to reveal what the tragedy is but it is life changing. It would not only change his life but anyone he falls in love with.
Andrew Grey once again writes a story that elicits all kinds of emotions, happiness, sadness, and anger. His books are always filled with amazing characters who sometimes have to fight for love even against all odds. In addition to all the characters we are introduced to Howard’s seeing eye dog, Token, and although I always knew how amazing these animals were I never knew the full extent of their capabilities. I also learned to appreciate what someone who is blind goes through, especially those born that way. Many people go blind in their lifetime but they at least knew what a color was, what a flower looked like, to Howard green is just a word with no significance.
There is explicit M/M sex but the story is much more than that, it is about men who have to overcome hardships and the ones who help them through it. It is about putting love, and family and friends before anything else.
