Twelve Zodiac Assassins.

Forged in the Darkness of the InBetween,
Ruled by the Shadow Side of their Stars,
The Only Hope for the Light of Humanity.

The InBetween, a subterranean haven created by the goddess Hecate for persecuted paranormals and ruled by twelve formerly-human princes, has been hidden for centuries, their numbers growing, and their hatred for humans festering. So when paranormal children are stolen, and the evidence implicates humans, the paranormals are called to rise out of the darkness and into the light to get retribution.

Imprisoned, with the demon soul attached to his own soul close to taking permanent possession, Zodiac Assassin Lyon jumps at the chance to earn his freedom by retrieving three women from the human world. But when the other Zodiacs try to steal his prize, Lyon must secure the women and run.

When foundling Persephone Payne is attacked by one man then rescued by Lyon, the monster plaguing her nightmares, she is thrust into a supernatural world beyond imagining and forced to rely on Lyon to protect her and her sisters by choice, not by blood. But, can she safeguard her heart from him?

After Persephone’s fate is finally revealed, Lyon must choose between the reclamation of his soul or saving her and the love he doesn’t believe he deserves.

The book Lyon’s Roar, the first book of the Zodiac Assassins series, is one of those books that took me about four attempts to read. The first thirty pages did not catch my full attention. I kept ‘giving up,’ and when I returned, I had to start from page one because I forgot what I read before.

Once over that challenge, the reading was better, and the story got smooth and enjoyable. I first had to ‘feel’ into that world and the InBetween.

Once I understood Lyon, I finally started to enjoy the story and the plot. Lyon is a multi-layered character, full of flaws, stubborn as hell, but in his way still admirable. He’s a ‘flawed man’ with a strong heart… I admit that he is my favorite character in the book, even though the author introduces her readers to many other characters.

I’m not entirely sure where the trip takes us with the series, but after I finally closed the book, I admit, I stayed curious.

However, I have to mention that, even though the story started to become fascinating and thrilling, and I ‘fell for’ Lyon, the character of Persephone fell a bit flat compared to him. So did the other women. In my opinion, none of them can stand their ground against his strength, and they start to ‘disappear’ behind him. I think it is a bit inconvenient since they build a significant character part within the story plot.

I didn’t see much development with them, while Lyon dashed forward and left them far behind. I consider it not surprising he became and stayed my favorite character in the book.

All in all, I would say, Lyon’s Roar is a decent start into a new series, and once over the slow start and the fact that the other characters next to Lyon paled a bit, I enjoyed the story. However, the character flaw, together with the book’s slow start, costs it a star.

Still, to the fans of paranormal romance, the book is recommendable. I’m convinced they’ll enjoy it very much!
