Cade Ivanov, scion of an old Canadian Romani family, carries the gift (or curse) of his ancestors: he sees ghosts. He’s also noticed that they’ve been getting a lot more aggressive, even belligerent, of late.

Considering moving out of big-city Edmonton to small-town Camrose, Cade meets Jay, who lives alone with his ten-year-old son Sam, and runs a successful real estate business. Together they explore some of available properties, getting to know each other as Jay tries to find the perfect place for Cade.

Their attraction to each other is immediate, but things get complicated when Cade inadvertently gives Jay a crash course on a world of unseen spirits he never imagined. An extra twist is added when it turns out that Jay’s son Sam’s imaginary friends are not imaginary at all.

This is a low-key domestic romantic comedy—except, oddly enough, when it veers into horror. The rom-com never disappears, but the haunted aspect of the tale begins to get hair-raising as Cade comes to realize that his skills are not just part of his family traditions or a way to earn a living. They might be essential for the greater good. There are lives at stake, lives that Cade realizes he cares a lot about.

I really enjoyed this book, particularly in the unorthodox spin it puts on the idea of ghosts and how they work. The title of the book is a sly play on words, but I’ll let you find that out on your own.
